Updated June 09, 2025 By Raza Malik:Open-world games are quite demanding regardless of the hardware they’re running on, and games do get delayed as that is the norm nowadays. No matter the size or the amount of attention that has been giving to them, these types of games pull gamers in and keep them engaged with the world.

Dying light 2 player jumping onto a platform

Oftentimes open-world games can act as the first stepping stone for a lot of first-time gamers due to the freedom they give the players. Giving players freedom is probably a reason why these types of games are so popular. Even though these games don’t have the same impact as open-world games likeAssassin’s CreedorRed Dead Redemption 2, they still hold value because they’re unique and can capture the same immersion as a bigger game.

8Dying Light 2: Stay Human

Initially, the release date was 2021, but due to developersTechlandfocusing on polishingDying Light 2it was sadly moved to early 2022. Many may see this move as dishearting since it was pushed back several times and didn’t have a release date when it first was announced. However, pushing this zombie parkour game and giving it more time can give developers to really make it shine.

Dying Lightchanged the genre and for good, incorporatingMirror’s Edgemechanics by giving players is a more challenging experience instead of shooting down hordes of zombies, now they can gracefully execute them with the many different weapons the games offer. Incorporating the day and night cycle to change gameplay has revolutionized a genre that many thought couldn’t go anywhere else.

7DokeV

This is probably one of the most interesting open-world games to come out in recent years.DokeVplays like the more recentPokemongames in terms of it being a color open-world game with companions to humans that are like the monsters inPokemon.DokeVaesthetically feels like aPokemongame with what the player is doing to how the monsters are behaving, but being on a beefier system it looks significantly better.

The city the game is set in is extremely lifelike, the cars moving by while the character’s bikes or walks beside them look a lot like their real-life counterparts. The monsters that will accompany the player looks like it will add elements to make the game more interesting than something else in this realm.

6Forspoken

An open-world game set in a fantasy world, that has an emphasis on fluid and quick movements. It looks like things like that have been done, however,Forspokenchanges it up. The movement is one of the focal points, as it adds fluidity to the combat makes things less clunky, and allows the player to witness some unique experiences.

WithForspokencoming out on thePlayStation 5,players will fully enjoy this interesting experience set in a world like other fantasy on the newer consoles will pull players in more. Gamers like open-world games with the aesthetic of games likeSkyrimorThe Witcherbecause it can be easier to put outlandish concepts and that makes things more compelling for the players in the end.

With superhero media, both in video games and movies being extremely popular, it makes sense to make a new game with the trend. From the makers of theBatmanArkhamseries,Rocksteadyis back. This time trying their hand in an anti-hero-type game, centered around theSuicide Squadwhich is based in theArkhamuniverse. The announcement has fans already throwing in names ofcharactersthey’d like to see.

So seeing the community already getting ready forSuicide Squad: Kill The Justice Leagueis a rare sight. However he skepticism is thatBatmangames haven’t beenthe best. In fact, it was until just recently till gamers have gotten really goodBatmangames.Rocksteady’sresume has clearly shown the community they know what they’re doing. With this new post-Batmanendeavor players can look forward toSuicide Squadknowing it’s in safe hands.

1Gotham Knights

Taking the same essence as theSuicide Squadgame with superheroes,Gotham Knightssets its own mark. Set in a separate universe out ofRocksteady’s Arkhamseries, the players take the role of the “bat family”.Batmanis missing and is set in an iconic storyline that onlywell-versedfans will pick up. One of the best parts ofGotham Knightsis that it’s a co-op.

Sadly the template for these types of games is theArkhamgames so the bar is high. While gamers are welcomingGotham Knightthey are also onthe fence. Mainly because with these types of games, theArkham-stylegameplay fits. The main issue is to avoid anotherAvengerssituation with post content and other things to keep players engaged. So by keeping players engaged, the developers can avoid that situation.
