It took more than a decade, butAlan Wakehas finally been re-released for modern consoles. This also marks the first time Remedy’s title has been brought to Sony platforms, which is good considering it takes place in the same continuity asControl, which isalready on PS4 and PS5. Unlike Remedy’s other games likeMax PayneandControl, combat is not so fast and kinetic.

All the same, players spend a large portion of the game blasting away the Taken using a small arsenal. The following list details every weapon players get inAlan Wakeand the best way to use them. Because of the unique scenario, the protagonist finds himself in, guns are not the only weapon he uses against the mysterious forces tormenting him.
8Flashlight - Light Up The Taken
Alan almost always has a flashlight by his side. The enemies cannot be shot until enough light has been shone on them. Pushing in the left trigger more heavily concentrates the light at the expense of battery power.
There are three different flashlights players can pick up. The game also plays with the idea of turret sequences by letting players control a giant searchlight while the Taken run toward Alan. Possessed objects that throw themselves at the player are also defeated by using the flashlight.

7Revolver - Use Against The Weak Enemies
At the beginning of each combat segment,Alan is generally gifted a revolver. This is probably the weapon players use the most and it is generally best used for the weaker and smaller Taken.
They take either two or three shots to kill. If the enemies are far away or there are only two of them, the revolver is Alan’s best bet. The biggest drawback is the small magazine size. With only six bullets to a magazine, players are forced to reload after killing two enemies.

6Shotgun (Heavy Enemies, Chainsaw Taken)
The shotgunis the most common of the heavy guns Alan picks up on his journey through the night. It is best used against big enemies. In fact, players would be wasting ammunition if they used it against the regular-sized Taken who attack Alan.

With only two bullets to a magazine, only one enemy can be killed before having to reload the gun. Despite the small magazine size, it is excellent against the bigger enemies when there is only one of them after the player.
5Flares - Use Against Groups Who Ambush Alan
Players press R1 to activate a flare and can either hold it until it burns out or drop it to the ground and run. It won’t damage the Taken, but it will work as a flashlight and take out their defenses until they are ready to be killed.
It is a great tool later in the gamewhen Alan starts fighting bigger groups. Lighting off a flare as three or more enemies are surrounding Alan is a great way to save his hide. If it is set off in a narrow area, it can also buy Alan some time to run away.

4Pump Action Shotgun - Use Against Larger Groups Of Heavier Enemies
The pump-action shotgun is weaker than the regular shotgun, but it has more ammunition in a magazine. With this in mind, it is better used if there is more than one larger enemy coming at the player.

All the same, the regular shotgun is probably a better option. Even though the pump-action shotgun has more bullets, it still has a slow rate of fire.
3Flare Gun - Best Defense Against The Flankers
The flare gun is one of the mostpowerful weapons inAlan Wake. It has a decent range and decimates almost anything within the blast radius. Because of its power and speed, it is the best weapon to use against flankers.
These enemies are mostly invisible until they get close enough to strike. If players just use the flashlight it takes too long to lower their defenses. The flaregun takes them out in one hit. It becomes especially useful later in the game when several flankers attack Alan at the same time.

2Hunting Rifle - Strongest Gun In The Game
The hunting rifleis stronger than any other gun other than the flare gun. With five bullets in the magazine and 25 in total, it also can take out quite a few enemies before running out of ammo.
Bullets also penetrate enemies, so one shot can take out two enemies at once. One-shot is about as strong as four revolver bullets. It can kill almost every enemy with one hit, while the stronger enemies take two.

1Flashbang Grenade - Kills Many Enemies Instantly
The flashbang grenadeworks exactly as one would expect. Because of the enemies' sensitivity to light, it kills just about every one of the Taken within its radius instantly.
It is more useful than flares for when enemies surround Alan. However, they are not quite as plentiful, so players should be aware of how many grenades are in their inventory. It takes time to detonate but goes off instantly if a thrown grenade hits an enemy before it lands.

Alan Wake Remasteredis out now for PlayStation, PC, and Xbox.
