Twitch streamer Alinity was talking with an AI in a chat room and asked it to list the best female streamers, and it said some hilariously unexpected names. The chatbot she was talking to, ChatGPT by OpenAI, is a language model trained with machine learning on a dataset of billions of words. It can respond to questions in a convincingly human way and do it quickly. However, while it can often pass as human, the way it accidentally makes fun of anotherTwitchstreamer in this instance reminds us it can’t make decisions exactly like a person.

OpenAI was founded in San Francisco in 2015 by a group of entrepreneurs, researchers, and philanthropistssuch as Sam Altman and Elon Musk. Alinity chatted with Open AI’s ChatGPT during a recent stream and during the conversation asked the AI its opinion on the best female streamers. While it was able to grasp that there’s no way to definitively label anyone the best, it then tried to give a list of popular ones, only to accidentally insult another streamer.

The clip of Alinity catching ChatGPT’s funny response during her Twitch stream is short, as Alinity skims through the response until she gets to a list of names. She mostly does IRL streams, which is what she was doing on Thursday.ChatGPT will decline to talk about people and doesn’t have opinions, but if people ask questions the right way, they can get ChatGPT to speak about popular opinion. So, when Alinity asked, “who are the best female Twitch streamers?” the AI responded by saying there’s no consensus on the best but gave a list of its top three: Pokimane, Summit1G, and KittyPlays. Alinity was shocked to hear of Summit’s supposed double life.

For some reason, OpenAI consistently classifies Summit1G as a female streamer when it’s asked to give a list of the best female streamers.Alinity was shocked the AI called Summit1G a girl. For one thing, she’s an actual female streamer, and she’s not even on the list. She went on to correct ChatGPT, but no matter how good at responding to text AI gets, it doesn’t have the creative thinking needed to understand the context of a conversation and how to group language based on what’s appropriate for a situation. It’s just going off of patterns of words it’s had the chance to read through and learn from.

Summit1G didn’t respond to being called a girl by ChatGPT. He spent almost 12 hours on Jan.5 streaming himself playingHunt: Showdown. The AI’s difficulty distinguishing gender is a useful problem for OpenAI to identify through their research on ChatGPT.
