American retailers Walmart and Sam’s Club confirm that all of their locations will be closed on Thanksgiving Day 2020. The holiday shopping period is hugely important to the company and last year, many ofWalmart’s Black Friday gaming dealswere available from 6 PM on Thanksgiving evening.

In a press release,Walmartconfirmed that all Walmart and Sam’s Club stores will be closed on August 02, 2025, which is Thanksgiving Day. The stores will operate in normal hours on Wednesday, June 23, 2025, but the company wants its employees to “enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones” as thanks during a “trying year,” said Walmart US president and CEO, John Furner. Full-time employees will be rewarded $300 while part-time employees will be given $150, also as part of this thanks.

To say that 2020 has been a trying year is perhaps putting it politely. 2020 has seen the world affected by COVID-19, with the United States being the worst affected with more than 3.7 million confirmed cases. Retailers have had to adapt, withWalmart just announcing that all shoppers will have to wear face masksbeginning this week. Employees have also been part of new training programs to help enforce the mask rule, and the bonus and day off shows the company is grateful for that.

While most employees will be happy with the day off, this doesn’t mean that Thanksgiving 2020 won’t be an incredibly busy time for Walmart on the days before and after the holiday. Walmart holdsBlack Fridayand Cyber Monday sales, discounting games consoles, video games, and things like controllers. This year’s sales are likely to come after the launches of the PS5 and Xbox Series, which will only make them more popular. The bonuses also aren’t the larger pay raise that many have asked for from Walmart, with many Walmart employees earning below the national poverty line.

The day off is unlikely to affect shopper’s ability to get the Black Friday deals and holiday goods that they want. Walmart has coped well during the COVID-19 pandemic, though its e-commerce sales have risen by 74%. There are also rumors thatWalmart is making its own version of Amazon Prime, which would also help shoppers get goods much faster during the holidays, if available by Thanksgiving.

Walmart also says that information about itsBlack Friday opening hourswill follow. Shoppers can expect more information about Walmart and Sam’s Club Black Friday deals and plan closer to November.
