Among Ussaw a surprising burst of popularity this summer. The game may have released back in 2018, but it’s one of themost popular indie titles to play in 2020. As it stands now,Among Usis only available on Android, iOS, and PC, and from the current look of things it won’t be releasing on other platforms anytime soon.
That said,Among Us' developer InnerSloth has a hopeful message for those looking to enjoy the game on platforms such as the PS4 and the Xbox One. While playingAmong Uswith a group of Twitch streamers, InnerSloth co-founder and programmer Forest Willard claimed the studio was looking into porting the recently announcedAmong Us 2over to consoles.

Willard also explained whyAmong Usisn’t on consoles already, as its communication system makes the game difficult to port. InnerSloth would have to create a new quick comms system that supports players queuing up in public lobbies, similar toRocket League. He said he doesn’t know if InnerSloth would be able to implement an in-game voice chat for consoles, and it would have to create a friend list system, otherwise the game wouldn’t work as well.
Understanding what Willard means requires an understanding ofAmong Us' mechanics. The game doesn’t have its own voice chat system, it instead relies on a text-based model where players type out what they want to say during Emergency Meetings. This system favors PC and mobile devices, where typing is easier compared to consoles.
Still, typing during an Emergency Meeting is tedious, so few play the game that way. Instead, groups of players often useDiscord’s voice chatto discuss who the imposters may be. Once the meeting is over, players then typically mute themselves until the next Emergency Meeting, or the game’s conclusion.
Coordinating all of this while playing on a console would be harder than on PC, where players can have Discord andAmong Usopen simultaneously. When it comes to portingAmong Us 2, InnerSloth’s goal will be trying to figure out how to create an in-game voice chat and queuing system that works well with the specified console.
Hopefully, InnerSloth manages to find a way to create a voice chat system that allowsAmong Us 2to potentially make it ontonext-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. If not, it’s still exciting to many to think about how InnerSloth will go about improvingAmong Us' formula in its sequel.
