Animal Crossing: New Horizonsis a seemingly innocent game which allows for a casual but fun experiences, but players have consistently surprised by using its creative functions for other, less innocent means. Just as fans areusingAnimal Crossingto continue Hong Kong protests, one player recreated the final beach scene from the award winning film1917in game.

The scene in question is at the very end of the movie when Lance Corporal Will Schofield leaves the safety of the trench to run across the battlefield in an effort to get a letter that would stop the attack to his commander. The scene is dramatic and tense, and somehow some of that was captured in thisAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsadaptation of it.

Of course, the limitations ofAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, such as themaximum allowance of eight players on an island, do weigh heavily on this recreation, but it is still impressive nonetheless. The level of detail in this player’s recreation deserves to be applauded.

Using audio directly from the movie, twitter user Michal recreates the scene with surprising detail. HerAnimal Crossingcharacter plays the role ofLance Corporal Schofield, and even begins her trek through the battlefield at a walking pace, slowly speeding up like Schofield did in the movie. Another interesting detail is the way that her character bumps into one of the extras that is running the other direction, which happens not once, but twice to Schofield during this scene in the movie.

Animal Crossing:New Horizonsallows players to create their own designs for clothing, something that is used to great effect here as everyone is wearing matching outfits and wielding the closest thing there is to a weapon inAnimal Crossing, a hatchet. This kind of creativity speaks to the way players will create an endless stream of content for games should the game itself allow it. That principle is seen in other places as well, like the modding community for games likeSkyrimand in level creators for games likeLittle Big PlanetandMario Maker.

There are of course some differences; the scene is much shorter and there is an obvious lack of actual shelling, but those kinds of things are to be expected. Still, the effort put into recreating the trenches using holes, fences, and wiring and everyone’s outfits is impressive. Ifone good thing has come from self isolationit is a huge spike in people’s creativity.
