Summary
One inquisitiveBaldur’s Gate 3fan found a special game over scene that most players will never experience firsthand, not least because triggering it requires going out of one’s way to seriously mess up the main story quest in Act 3. Their discovery adds to the massive pile of evidence testifying to theastonishing attention to detail thatBaldur’s Gate 3oozes.
Warning! Baldur’s Gate 3 spoilers up to early Act 3 ahead. The vast majority ofthe third act inBaldur’s Gate 3is dedicated to tracking down the three Netherstones meant to help the player take on The Absolute, which reveals itself as the Elder Brain by this point in the story. One of those items will already be in the adventuring party’s possession from the end of Act 2, while the remaining two MacGuffins will drive the plot of the RPG’s final act.

And while the developers made sure that the Netherstones can neither be sold nor thrown like most other items inBaldur’s Gate 3, YouTuber BOB_BestOfBugs still found a way to get rid of them, triggering an extra special game over scene in the process. The player took advantage of the fact that this trio of quest items can be placed in a container and then the canister itself gotten rid of, having stored one of their Netherstones in a vase before chucking the jar into an abyss. This immediately prompted a cutscene whereinThe Emperor fromBaldur’s Gate 3labeled the perpetrator of the throw as a “fool,” declaring that all their efforts to stop the Elder Brain are now in vain.
Just in case the player isn’t too bothered by name-calling, the cutscene ends with the Elder Brain transforming their character into a Mind Flayer, which is something that they’ve been tasked with avoiding since the opening moments ofBaldur’s Gate 3. The Netherbrain in this unique cutscene also appears to take on The Emperor’s squid-like face, which is possibly the game’s subtle way of communicating that the friendly Mind Flayer stopped bestowing the mind control protections upon the player from the moment he realized he can no longer use them to advance his goals, which is fairly consistent with his character.
Fans looking to experience this candidate for one of thecreepiest moments inBaldur’s Gate 3themselves should make sure to save their game before trying any shenanigans with the Netherstones. Namely, there is at least one known bug that stops the cutscene from triggering, with some player reports indicating that placing the stones on Orin’s body will simply make them disappear and hence soft-lock the party from finishing the game.
Baldur’s Gate 3is available now on PC and PS5. An Xbox Series X/S port is expected to launch in late 2023.
