Barbieis set up like an Isekai from an anime. Barbie Land and the real world, our reality, exist in the same universe. Apparently, it’s easy to travel between them because characters have done this before. After waking up and discovering that she feels weird, Barbie travels to California hoping to cure this ailment.

Ken, as a loyal boyfriend, decides to follow Barbie and the two of them have a memorable adventure involving self-discovery and self-actualization. Above all else, the movie is a comedy and a great one at that, so it’s no surpriseBarbiecame packed with great lines.

8“You Guys Ever Think About Dying?”

It’s all fun and games until Barbie utters these words. It’s completely out of left field which is why it’s such a funny line. Right after this, the next day begins like a time loop scenario wherein Barbie relives her routine.

Things are slightly off like she thinks the water in her shower is not great and her milk is spoiled. Why is everything going wrong for Barbie and why is she thinking about death? Well, to avoid spoilers, that’s the big question in the central plot.

7“Yeah, I’m Confused About That Too.”

In Barbie Land, there are two types of people. The women are all different versions of Barbie and the men are all different versions of Ken. There are exceptions like Alan who is played by an awkward Michael Cera.

The narrator comments on how there are no other Alans which is weird. That’s when Alan comments on being confused too. Michael Cera is no stranger to getting cast in toy movies or subjects around othernerdy things like games.

6“I Wouldn’t Mind Seeing What Kind Of Weird Blob Ken Is Packing.”

Barbie is having a crisis of character, so the other versions of her tell Barbie that she needs to go to see Weird Barbie. Played by Kate McKinnonof SNL fame, Weird Barbie is exactly the way one would imagine. One of the funniest lines she says in her introduction to Barbie is this comment about Ken.

The idea is brought up several times in the movie about how Barbie and Ken are not anatomically correct next to real men and women. Calling their regions blobs is a comedic way of looking at it and Kate McKinnon delivers the line well.

5“Are You Two Shining?”

After Barbie escapes from the Mattel headquarters, Gloria peels into the parking lot to rescue her. On the ride, Barbie and Gloria seem to be having a conversation without saying much as if it is code speak. Weirded out, Gloria’s daughter Sasha comments on how they are acting like they have the Shining ability.

It’s appeared in a lot ofStephen King novels and moviesbut it is probably most famous inThe Shining. It is apparent that Sasha is cool based on how she tears Barbie down, but her ability to referenceThe Shiningmade her even cooler in that moment.

4“Hi, Barbie!”

There are a lot of characters that either say “Hi Barbie” or “Hi Ken” in the movie. If viewers were trying to play a certain game based on when these lines were said, they would pass out in the first minute of the movie.

Of the many utterances of these lines, the funniest one is deliveredby John Cenawho is playing a mermaid version of Ken. He appears after Ken returns to Barbie Land to spread the word about patriarchy. He has a sick ukulele solo later on that is also great.

3“She Wears Sweatpants All Day!”

There is nothing better in a comedy than a fake ad about toys.South Parkhashad some of the funniest such as Alabama Man or the Mr. Hanky board game. TheBarbiemovie has a good one too about halfway through.

It depicts a sad Barbie who is going through a related crisis. She wears sweatpants all day, eats to stay happy, and can’t stop looking at Instagram engagement photos. It’s an ad that will probably hit too close to home for some, but it’s all part of the fun.

2“I Wanna Push You Around.”

Surprising no one, the patriarchy is not a good fit for Barbie Land. So, Barbie, Weird Barbie, and several others devise a way to get the Kens to turn on each other. The idea was for all of the various Barbies to invite their Ken partners to the beach to be serenaded.

The song every Ken chooses to sing AT Barbie, not to which is an important distinction, is “Push” by Matchbox Twenty. Musicfans of the 90sare going to laugh the hardest at this bit.

1“I’m Just Ken!”

This betrayal between the Kens at the beach leads to a war scene between them all. This battle quickly turns intoa musical numberwherein Ken is singing his heart out about just being himself. Who would have thought that Ken, in aBarbiemovie, would be the best character?

Ryan Gosling’s performance helps give Ken the fullest arc in the movie. He goes from a pathetic version of Ken to an overconfident villain to a man that is okay with just being himself.
