Gamers have been awaiting the release ofBiomutantsince it was announced in August 2017 as a “post-apocalyptic kung-fu fable.” Now,Biomutant’s May 25 release date is quickly approaching, though the long wait has been understandable as this is studio Experiment 101’s first game as a relatively small team. However, there are other costs to having a small team, too. It is confirmed thatBiomutantwon’t support native 4K resolution on PS5.
The technical detail was confirmed Thursday byBiomutant’s publisher,THQ Nordic, on Twitter. THQ Nordic made it clear thatBiomutantrunning on PS5 will have its native 4K resolution deactivated. This, according to THQ Nordic, is due to undefined technical reasons.Biomutantwill still run at a 1080p resolution upscaled to 4K on PS5, and it’s also confirmed to support 60 FPS on current-gen consoles, but not next-gen yet. There are no announced plans to “fix” native 4K support for PS5 for the time being.

There is some important context regarding the lack ofnative 4K support on PS5 forBiomutant, that beingBiomutantisn’t technically being released on PS5. There are no next-gen versions ofBiomutantfor either PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. Rather, buyers will be able to play the PS4 and Xbox One versions ofBiomutanton the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S through backward compatibility.
It should be noted that while native 4K has been disabled on PS5, it’s still enabled onXbox Series X. The reason for this is, as THQ Nordic made clear, “technical reasons.” Something must have happened late into development that kept Experiment 101 from reaching native 4K on PS5, so it decided upscaling from 1080p was the better option.
THQ Nordic did confirm that native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions ofBiomutantare in development. There’s no timeline forBiomutant’s upgraded releases, but waiting for the native versions of the game could lead to better overall performance. THQ Nordic did note that a decision hasn’t been made as to whether this upgrade will be free or not.
The publisher also reiterates thatExperiment 101is working hard to make sureBiomutantis the polished experience it has promised since the game’s announcement. Experiment 101 is also a 20-person development team working on its first game, so not everything may come together as fast as fans want, but Experiment 101 will hopefully still deliver the game everyone has been waiting for.
