Grab a box of tissues becauseBrooklyn Nine-Nineis coming to an end… again. The new trailer for the 8th and final season of the popular police sitcom has dropped, and it’s sure to bring tears to your eyes and a smile on your face.
TheBrooklyn Nine-Ninefinal seasontrailer opens on a somber note, with Detective Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) reminiscing with his partner and best friend Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) about all the good times they’ve had. He’s afraid that their time will be cut short, and that they won’t be able to grow old together like he’s always imagined.

After going down memory lane, Boyle stops and asks if Jake is crying, to which Peralta responds with a tearful “No!” before admitting that he is indeed full-on crying. The rest of theBrooklyn Nine-Ninetrailer focuses on the other main characters, who are up to their usual hilarity. This includes the stoic Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) accidentally sending a dick-pic and the reveal that all the other departments sent their versions of series buffoons Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) and Scully (Joel Mckinnon) to the Nine-Nine. There’s also a couple of other familiar faces, including the one-time civilian administrator Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti), Rosa’s ex-fiance, wildcard undercover cop Adrian Pimento (Jason Mantzoukas), and Jake Peralta’s on-and-off nemesisThe Pontiac Bandit (Craig Robinson).
Created by Dan Goor and Mike Schur,Brooklyn Nine-Ninepremiered on Fox in 2013. The series follows a team of detectives from the fictional 99th Precinct of the New York City Police Department based in Brooklyn. After being quickly met with high praise from audiences and critics, the first season went on to win Golden Globes for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy and Best Actor- Television Series Musical or Comedy for Samberg. The show ran for fives seasons on Fox until it was unceremoniously canceled by the Network. After an outpouring from fans, NBC picked up the series for a 6th and 7th season. Now, the show is set to premiere its final 10-episodes starting next month.
Not much is known about the plot lines for these final episodes. The newBrooklyn Nine-Ninetrailer is intentionally brief and vague, mostly teasing some funny moments more than anything. However, in the past year, the US has seen a resurgence of protests and activism related to police violence. Given the show’s subject matter, it seems inevitable thatBrooklyn Nine-Ninewill deal with some of these subjects. Castmember Terry Crews has previously stated that the writers threw out a lot of what was written for the upcoming season in the wake of the 2020 protests. Like many cop shows,Brooklyn Nine-Ninehas received some criticism for its sanitized portrayal of the NYPD, a police force that has had its fair share of controversies in the real world. Despite its comedic format,Brooklyn Nine-Ninehasn’t shied away from difficult or controversial subjects in the past, such as PTSD as well as systemic homophobia and racism within the NYPD.
Thefinal season ofBrooklyn Nine-Nineis also significantly shorter than previous seasons, so hopefully, this is enough time for the series to wrap up all its plotlines, give proper closure to the main characters, and deal with the heavier subject matter. Until then all we can say is… NINE-NINE!
