Incuvo has officially announced the development ofBulletstorm VRfor Meta Quest VR devices and PlayStation VR2. It’s been over 12 years since the release ofBulletstorm, developed by People Can Fly and Epic Games. The bizarre first-person shooter mixed absurd humor with an arsenal of over-the-top weapons and gore for a truly unique experience.Bulletstormsales underperformed, however, and a sequel was never made. NowBulletstorm VRseeks to correct the course for the franchise.
While sales for the originalBulletstorm’s 2011 launch underperformed, the first-person shooter’s style and unique gameplay did lead to a second opportunity for the game in 2017. Gearbox Publishing reached a deal to haveBulletstormremastered with improved textures and additional content. In the years following theBulletstormremaster’s release, developers at People Could Fly would say that they hopedBulletstormwould receive a “second life” in the future. That day may have finally arrived.

People Can Fly has officially partnered with VR game developer Incuvo to createBulletstorm VR. Incuvo is known forVR games includingGreen Hell VR,Layers of Fear VR, andBlair Witch Oculus Quest Edition. In other words, it’s known for adapting games for VR, withBulletstorm VRbeing the latest example.Bulletstorm VRwill launch in 2023 for PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, and Meta Quest Pro.
InBulletstorm VR, players will once againtake on the role of Grayson Hunt. This time around, Hunt has crash-landed on an abandoned resort planet named Stygia where he’ll both have to fight for survival and continue his pursuit of revenge. The setting ofBulletstorm VRfeatures a mix of urban skyscrapers and lush wilderness. Foes within this setting are equally diverse, ranging from brutal mercenaries to gargantuan creatures with strong appetites. Luckily, Hunt will have an arsenal capable of taking on all enemies, big and small.
Virtual reality will allow players to wieldBulletstorm’s innovative Energy Leash mechanic in entirely new ways. Players will utilize it entirely with motion controls, pulling and tugging enemies and environmental objects with ease, and even controlling the trajectories of bullets in slow motion.Bulletstorm’s unique mix of creative weaponsand combat abilities make it a ripe opportunity for virtual reality gameplay.
Exactly how muchBulletstorm VRwill draw from the original game isn’t entirely clear. There’s no evidence that the originalBulletstorm’s off-the-wall frat bro humorwill return, for example. But it’d be odd to make aBulletstormgame without it. Perhaps the VR game will takeBulletstorm’s chaotic first-person gameplay and leave the humor in 2011.
