In a time when remakes and reboots like theClone Highrevival feel almost like the rule rather than the exception, it can be difficult to really muster up enthusiasm for any given new announcement in that regard. New live-action Disney movie remake? Yawn. Another attempt to resuscitate the bloated corpse ofBubsy the Cat? Morbid curiosity at best. But sometimes, just knowing who’s involved with a project is enough to warrant, at the very least, cautious optimism.

That may be the case with theupcoming HBO Max reboot ofClone High. A rather downplayed cult favorite, the original MTV series never really took off like it wanted to, regardless of its still passionate fanbase. But series creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are ready to take another crack at things, and anybody familiar with their work in the years since the show’s cancelation (including hits likeThe Lego MovieandSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) should be giddy as a ska band at that knowledge.

Lord and Miller recently spoke with Collider about the progress of theshiny newClone High, and it looks like things are chugging along steadily, if a bit slowly. “Well, this is the microphone that I use to do Scudworth,” Lord said, indicating his recording setup, “so we’re recording voices, and it’s a two-season order, so every episode is in some part of the process right now. It makes it a really busy time, but it’s also really fun.” So there’s a promise thatClone Highwill come back with not 1, but 2 seasons, which should be welcome news to long-time fans.

Unfortunately, there’s still no release date yet to speak of, even though the cast and crew are hard at work making things happen. “I know that some of the episodes are in animation right now,” Miller chimed in. “But I don’t know when it will actually be on the air.” Don’t worry, though. This popular 2000s cartoon is definitely still making a comeback.

Clone Highcenters on a group of high school students who just so happen to be clones of famous historical figures. The class sees young versions of Abe Lincoln, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, and JFK to name a few, with Miller lending hisvocal talents to JFK. They were created by the mad scientist Dr. Cinnamon J. Scudworth, who now works as the principal of the titular school and is voiced by Lord (as previously mentioned). While the original 2002-2003 series didn’t last long, it earned a passionate and dedicated fanbase that persists to this day, which helped make the reboot a reality.

Given howLord and Miller seem to be hit machinesthese days with almost everything they touch, a proper continuation forClone Highalmost feels too good to be true. Heck, it looks like the reboot may already end up with more episodes than the entire original series. So maybe remakes and reboots don’t always have to be tired retreads. Sometimes, they can just be about righting past wrongs.

The originalClone Highseries is available to stream on Paramount Plus.
