One ofDestiny 2’s older seasonal activities may be making a grand return with the release of the Lightfall DLC, it would seem. While Bungie has kept up a steady pace of seasonal content releases over the years, the developer hasn’t always needed to come up with an entirely new set of activities to keep the narrative moving forward, opting instead to upgrade old progression systems with new maps and objectives.
Since Bungie releases a major new season update every couple of months forDestiny 2, the game always needs to have a solid stack of rotating activities ready to go. Since these need to be mechanically consistent and make sense in the context of the given narrative, it seems sensible that some of the old, long-removed activities could come back down the line.

Notably, Reddit user Pace955 spotted that one of the Bungie’s recentDestiny 2Lightfall DLC promotional materials featured a curious Commendation UI. Here, the “Joy Bringer” Commendation referenced a variety of in-game mission types, such as the fan-favoriteDestiny 2Battlegrounds activity, which has been prominently featured during the Witch Queen DLC in several unique variants. Most interesting, however, is the fact that the UI specifically mentions Wrathborn Hunts as one of the activities where “Joy Bringer” is active, and since Wrathborn Hunts haven’t been around for quite a while at this point, the obvious implication is that they could be coming back.
Wrathborn Hunts were a major element of theDestiny 2Season of the Huntback in 2020, which came out alongside the Stasis-focused Beyond Light DLC. Being the game’s first major foray into the Guardians' conflict with the Hive god of war, Xivu Arath, it certainly wouldn’t be out of place to see the activity return during the year of Lightfall, which is almost certainly going to deal with Xivu Arath in some capacity.
It’s worth pointing out, of course, thatDestiny 2’s Season of the Chosenwas considered to be the superior offering. Chosen first introduced the fan-favorite Battlegrounds activity, which got several extra batches of content later on. In comparison, Hunts are smaller and more contained, with the gameplay loop taking just a few minutes of time.
Having said all that, the highlighted UI is simply a mockup, and the fact that it references “Empire, Nightmare, and Wrathborn Hunts” — with Empire and Nightmare Hunts present in the game still — might suggest that this is just Bungie covering all its bases. It very well could mean nothing in the end. Yet, with all thebuild crafting changes coming toDestiny 2, a shorter and more focused seasonal activity could end up being welcomed by the community.
Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
