Over the past few years, there have been severalDragon Ball Zvideo games.Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, andDragon Ball FighterZare all contemporary and popular titles, and it seems the franchise is exploring more genres than just simple fighting games. In fact,Dragon Ball: The Breakersmay be the most unique game within the franchise.
That’s becauseDragon Ball: The Breakersis an asymmetrical multiplayer game, set in a universe where players take on the role of human survivors. Instead of fighting to defeat Frieza, Cell, and so on head-on, they’ll try to secure a few paths to victory as Bulma, Oolong, a customizable and weak human character, or others. Asymmetrical multiplayer games have a mixed reception overall, with games likeDead by Daylightseeing success but games likeEvolvefolding.

In this case, it’s sort of easy to see why. While the 7v1gameplay ofDragon Ball: The Breakersseems interesting, players are stepping into a franchise that has insane power scaling as some of the weakest characters there are. Reasonably, many may be wondering if Goku is in the game, and he is—in fact, in a roundabout way, he’s playable.
Dragon Ball: The Breakers – How to Play Goku
In asymmetrical games, the problem is that playing the killer, or theraider in the case ofDragon Ball: The Breakers, is usually more fun than any survivor.Dragon Ball: The Breakersmakes a few key changes to the asymmetrical formula that may actually change this dynamic. The key feature here is that there are multiple paths to victory for survivors and raiders.
Dragon Ball: The Breakers’ Survivorscan find equipment boxes for weapons and vehicles, collect Change Power, and collect Dragon Balls, all before activating the super time machine to win. With enough Change Power, players can use an ability known as Dragon Change that’ll let them turn into powerfulDragon Ball Zcharacters to attack, defend, rescue, or flee. Dragon Balls will allow players to increase power for everyone or raise their Dragon Change level to the max—allowing them to become Goku, for one example.
It’s an interesting mechanic to see, makingDragon Ball: The Breakersstand out from other asymmetrical multiplayer games. It’s also nicely rooted in franchise lore. Ultimately, who else players can become will remain to be seen, but all of this is promising for an otherwise odd-seeming game.
Dragon Ball: The Breakerswill launch on October 14 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
