Marvel Studios’What If…?stands as one of Disney Plus’ most intriguing offerings as the MCU goes full-on animated mode. Fortunately, early impressions of the show speak of a highly accomplished Marvel spin that is, above all things, simply fun to watch.

What If…?’s most recent trailershowcased a tiny preview of what seems like the perfect setting for the MCU’s newly found multiverse, although for many, the series’ main appeal will be the opportunity to see several of the actors reprise their roles. Aside from Chadwick Boseman’s posthumous voice acting,What If…?brings back most of the MCU actors, with some notable exceptions like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Tom Holland, and current plaintiff vs. Disney, Scarlett Johansson.

Luckily,What If…?seems to have no problem living up to most critics' imagination as Collider Steven Weintraub is saying the “3rd episode is a better mystery than some movies,” while also echoing most people’s claims thatBoseman’s last outing as T’Challais his last great performance. As far as the pilot goes, Fandango’s Erik Davis called it “the MCU’s Twilight Zone” with each of the first three episodes being better than the previous one, all while managing to stay consistently fun.

For ComicBook’s Josh Wilding, Marvel Studios definitely rises up to the task when it comes to animation, claiming the entire premise for the show works great and at the same time giving some love to the show’s take on Captain Carter. However,What If…?is not just for die-hard fans as Rotten Tomatoes’ Tania Lamba still gave the show plenty of praise for being “a crazy, trippy ride,” despite clearly voicing it’s far off from being her favorite series.

It’s not all positives forWhat If…?as /Film’s Ethan Anderton expressed some of the familiarvoices from the MCUare simply “no great voice actors,” which currently appears to be the focal points of criticism towards the show. Lastly, Murphy’s Multiverse' Charles Villanueva posted that “Animation feels stiff at times,” regardless of it gaining more fluidity during actions scenes. Despite all of that, he claimed the entire show is an easter egg bonanza.

AfterLokiintroduced the real multiverse as part of the MCU, it will definitely be interesting to see just how relevant the stories inWhat If…?will turn out to be for the wider Marvel scope. The series already promises to introduce severalotherworldly characters such as Marvel Comics’s The Watcher, who can take these alternate Avengers teams for a real ride across many realms and realities.

What If…?will premiere on Disney Plus on June 02, 2025.
