AnElden Ringplayer with Vigor set to the highest possible level found a seemingly guaranteed victory against the Fire Giant pummeled into the harsh snow. It seems that even successfully abiding by the pleas ofElden Ring’s community to invest into Vigor is not necessarily enough to survive in the punishing Lands Between.

The Fire Giant is the crux of much discourse surrounding the critically acclaimed open world RPG, with some considering the last known survivor of the war waged against Giants to be a colossal visual spectacle, while others believe it tomark a decline in the balance and quality ofElden Ring. No matter one’s disposition, the Fire Giant presents an inescapable barrier of red locks, fire-imbued limbs, and some of the highest damage dealt thus far in a playthrough.

In a video uploaded to Reddit by u/Fc2833, the player character is seen summoning Torrent, orienting themselves back to a Fire Giant which is already well into the second phase and focused on the summoned Mimic Tear.Equipped with the Dark Moon Greatsword, the Tarnished rushes back into the fray, successfully avoiding the Fire Giant’s right arm which lunges overhead. Slashing with reckless abandon, and a precarious degree of stamina, at the Giant’s one remaining foot, the boss soon rolls away twice in quick succession.

Forcing Torrent forward with little stamina to spare, the player is seduced by the allure of greed, positioning themselves underneath the Fire Giantto swing their weapon at any opportunity. Victory is nigh, but with the caption “when you have 99 vigor but only 1 brain cell,” the endeavor was inevitably doomed. With an unexpected roll which sees the Fire Giant’s final foot ram against the player, the previously thriving health bar is reduced to a shadow of its former self, and the remaining third is dwindled away by fire that lingers on the ground. Left with nought but a sliver of life, the player rolls away, and is in the middle of healing when a swift fist from the Fire Giant comes from behind, ending any chance of a pyrrhic triumph for the Tarnished.

Comments agreed that the cause of death was perfectly timed, both for the purpose of killing and for the sake of comedy. Studying the health bar, it was clear that the Flask had been consumed, and if the Fire Giant’s killing blow had arrived just a second later, the player would have likely survived. Many blamed the fact thatboth Radagon’s and Marika’s Soresealswere equipped, meaning the player was receiving significantly more damage than necessary.

Elden Ringis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
