Over the course of this week, it has become increasingly clear that a demo for the highly-anticipatedFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeis on the way. ThisFinal Fantasy 7 Remakedemowill be the first time that many fans go hands-on with the forthcoming title, and the experience may leave some players curious about what occurred behind-the-scenes to inform Square Enix’s design decisions. Fortunately, this is something thatFF7 RemakeProducer Yoshinori Kitase has recently touched upon, citing a PS4 exclusive as a point of study during development.
Specifically, Kitase indicates that when a new game is released while Square is in the “process of developing something,” it is the developer’s practice to “play it in an open space to see what sort of technology, elements, and graphics they are using.” According to Kitase, the goal of this process is, in part, to see how other developers approach “roadblocks” that Square may be facing with its own games, and theFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeproducer calls out one title that has been studied in particular:Insomniac Games’Marvel’sSpider-Man.

Indeed,Spider-Manis among thebest-selling PS4 exclusivesof all time, and it released to critical acclaim. As such, it is not extremely surprising to hear that Square looked at the game while developingFinal Fantasy 7 Remake, and it would not be a shock to see some of the lessons learned appear in the final product. This is not to say that mechanics fromSpider-Manwill be obviously present inFF7 Remake, but rather that some core design philosophies may be shared between the two games.
Kitase goes on to emphasize that while Square has looked at other games during the development ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remake, it is not interested in the title simply being an amalgamation of other developers' ideas. He indicates that maintaining a “core idea” that is left untouched by the influence of other games is key, and fans should thus not expectFF7 Remaketo feel like a hodgepodge of mechanics found in other AAA titles.
