Kirsten Lepore is the showrunner for theGuardians of the Galaxyanimated spinoff seriesI Am Groot, which wasannounced alongside theGuardians of the Galaxyholiday specialin 2020. She has recently been in the rumor mill as one possible choice to continue Gunn’s work on the mainlineGuardians of the Galaxyfilm franchise, as the post-credit scene of the third film seems to indicate that at least some of the characters might return for another adventure.

Groot in I Am Groot

In a recent interview withThe Hollywood Reporterabout the second season of her animated show centered around baby Groot, the director revealed her attitude towards the potential role in live-action work and reaffirmed her dedication to animation. “Yeah, I’m open to it, for sure,” Lepore revealed after pivoting from discussing her work onI Am Grootseason 2 without Gunn’s involvement. “Years ago, I was like, ‘I definitely want to do live-action!’ I was trying to move into live-action, and now, I think I’m more at peace. I don’t even want to say ‘at peace’ because I’m not settling. I love animation so much. I think I better understand what I bring to animation because it does take a really specific type of person to direct it. I’ve been doing it for so long and I feel very comfortable in that space, and I feel good at it. So I really enjoy working in animation – and I would be totally happy to work in animation for the rest of my life – but I would also be very curious to experiment with live-action.”

If there does happen to be anotherGuardians of the Galaxyproject in the works, Lepore’s experience working on the spinoff, especially alongside Gunn in the first season, might give her the edge in terms of understanding the characters and mindset behind the team. While it is generally accepted thatGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3showed how to end a trilogy, that doesn’t necessarily preclude the franchise from starting up a new overarching plot. After all,Guardians of the Vol. 3ended by promising Star-Lord would return.

While there are certainly those who look forward to seeing more from the franchise, one of the core reasons the films were so good was precisely because theGuardians of the Galaxycast was a lesson in on-screen chemistry, Gunn included. The director shared a uniquely stellar relationship with most of the stars involved and was able to bring out the best in the team as a result. While it might be nice to see such fan favorites return for more adventures with a new directorial vision, it’ll never be quite the same.

TheGuardians of the Galaxyfranchise is now available for streaming on Disney Plus.
