Summary
Jujutsu Kaisenis a series that is taking the entire world by storm, both with its manga and anime adaptations. Though the series is relatively new, it has quickly shot up to the heights of popularity for a multitude of reasons, whether it’s the incredible and diverse cast of characters, the beautiful animation or the intricate and captivating world that the story is set in. One of the biggest strengths of the series, however, is the deeply intricate powersystem of Jujutsu Sorcery, which is not only completely unique and complex, but it also gives every single practitioner of this power an ability that is incredibly creative and distinct for every sorcerer.
This power system allows for the writer, Gege Akutami, to come up with some of the most powerful abilities that have ever been put to the page, making it so some select characters are vastly superior to others in terms of combat viability. Each Jujutsu Sorcerer is ranked to a specific ‘Grade’ by how adept they are with their specific cursed technique. Characters are tiered from Grade 4 to Grade 1, with the latter being those sorcerers that are more powerful than their contemporaries in the lower tiers. However, there is a tier above even Grade 1 which is called the’Special Grade'.

What is the Special Grade
The Special Grade in Jujutsu society is a tier that exists even above Grade 1 and houses what the series itself refers to ‘anomalies’. What this means is that the characters that exist in the Special Grade are so overwhelmingly strong that they can only be classified as walking natural disasters, something that can be attributed to either the nature of their cursed technique, how well they have perfected it or even just the incredibleamounts of latent cursed energythat they have within themselves. Sorcerers of this level are so rare that in the current era, only 4 of them have officially been recognized.
The first, and most powerful, of these Special Grade sorcerers is the iconic Gojo Satorou who is seen more of as the face ofJujutsu Kaisenthan the actual main character. Gojo’s cursed technique is called Limitless, an ability which creates an invisible forcefield around him that continuously slows down people coming towards it, making him impossible to hurt. Other than this, he also has theextremely rare Six Eyes technique, something which grants him extraordinary perception, allowing him to see the flow of cursed energy and making him almost impossible to defeat. His mastery over these techniques, along with his blue, red and hollow purple attacks, make him a character no one can reach.
Another Special Grade Sorcerer is Suguru Geto, a user of the Cursed Spirit Manipulation technique. Since much of the villains in this series are very powerful curses, Geto can seal them away into a cursed, marble-like orb after upon defeating them, which in turn allows him to swallow the orb. Though described by him as being revolting, swallowing the orb allows Geto tosummon the same cursein his battles, giving him full control over it during the fight.
Yuki Tsukumo is the Special Grade Sorcerer that we know the least of, but is one that is still within the upper echelons of power in the series. Yuki possesses incredible proficiency in her cursed technique, which allows her to alter the her own mass as well as that of her powerful Shikigami named Garuda that she can control. With this, she was able to greatly damage Kenjaku in their fight, making her punches sort of like mini black holes that were very tough for him to deal with. Moreover, she is also arguably the most physically strong sorcerer in all ofJujutsu Kaisenand is skilled enough to evenuse her Domain Expansion, though she was never shown to do so.
The last of the Special Grade Sorcerers is also the youngest, Yuta Okkotsu. Yuta is stated to have the largest pool of innate cursed energy in the entire series. In theJujutsu Kaisen 0movie, Yuta was seen to be attached to a Special Grade curse named Rika which was formed after he witnessed a traumatic event in his childhood. Rika itself is incredibly powerful and allows for Yuta to attack people viciously from a distance, while also being veryadept with his cursed tool. However, Yuta’s cursed energy comes most into play with his technique which allows him to copy the technique of anyone that he is going up against.
Who Else Can Join the Special Grade?
While the official Special Grade designation is given to those who have some affiliation with Jujutsu High, we can very easily speculate who else would be in the Special Grade in terms of power or abilities alone. There are a handful of sorcerers that are equally as strong (or stronger) than those in the special grade, so if they had any proper affiliation with the school, then they would be up there as well.
Kinji Hakari
Hakari is a fan favorite characterfrom the manga that is going to make a massive splash within the anime once he makes his debut. He is one of the most charismatic characters in the entire series, stealing every single scene that he is in. However, despite his wild and hilarious antics, Hakari is also one of the most powerful characters in the show, having the ability to open Domain Expansions repeatedly through a condition within them that increases his probability to hit a jackpot. What this jackpot does is that whenever he hits one within his Domain (which takes the form of a gambling Pachinko game), he is given unlimited Cursed Energy andautomatic Reverse Cursed Techniquefor a duration of 4 minutes and 11 seconds. Whenever he hits the jackpot and continues to spin it, trying his luck, the chances to hit the jackpot keep increasing. So, whenever he is on a roll, he can effectively have unlimited cursed energy for as long as he wants. This ability allowed him to defeat Kashimo, one of the strongest Sorcerers in history and was even stated by Special Grade Sorcerer, Yuta Okkotsu, to be stronger than him. The reason he actually isn’t in the Special Grade was due to his suspension from the school.
Hajime Kashimo
Hajime Kashimo was the strongest sorcerer of his time during the Edo period of Japan. During this time, he became so much more powerful than his contemporaries that all he knew was all encompassing boredom from never fighting to his full extent, so when Kenjaku told him about Sukuna’s eventual resurrection, Kashimo agreed to be resurrected in a new body just to fight him, even effortlessly defeating 40 sorcerers in the Culling Game. Kashimo is insanely powerful as he was able to go virtually toe to toe with Hakari, a sorcerer on the Special Grade level and was able to do a lot of damage to him with his lightning abilities. Though he lost the fight, it was later revealed that hedidn’t even use his cursed techniqueas that is only a one time thing that he wanted to use against Sukuna. After eventually joining the fight against Sukuna, Kashimo activated his powerful Mythical Beast Amber technique which did damage Sukuna enough to awaken his true Heian Era form.
Kenjaku
Kenjaku is by far the most mysterious character in Jujutsu Kaisen, a master manipulator that has been pulling the strings behind all major events of the series from the very start. Kenjaku hosts one of the most powerful abilities ever seen, which is essentially body swapping. With this technique, he is able to implant his brain into the bodies of other sorcerers, even if they’re dead. In doing so, he gains access to all of their memories and abilities and isable to master themas much as the previous user did as is most obviously seen with him spending most of his time in Geto’s body and using Cursed Spirit Manipulation. He can also use the abilities of all those whose bodies he has overtaken before in the course of over 1000 years as seen when he uses Kaori Itadori’s ability against Yuji and Choso. He can very easily be placed into Special Grade as he was able to defeat Special Grade Sorcerer, Yuki Tsukumo, and has one of the most powerful Domain Expansions in the series.
Ryomen Sukuna
Sukuna is a character that’s not just strong enough to be in the Special Grade, he is a character that is in a Grade entirely of his own. He was always someone that was built up to be in his own realm of strength, but until recently, we had no idea how incredible his feats truly are. In chapter 236 of the manga, we see that Sukuna had not only completely decimated Gojo, the character that everyone regarded as the strongest Special Grade Sorcerer, but we eventually found out that in doing so,he was not even going all out. Especially in his fight with Gojo, Sukuna showed a level of mastery and knowledge over the fundamentals of Jujutsu that other characters simply did not even know existed, taking Megumi’s Ten Shadows technique, perfecting it effortlessly and then using Mahoraga as a blueprint to perfect his own innate technique to completely invalidate and bypass Gojo’s infinity which is a defensive technique that characters below Gojo can’t even fathom. In a world of insane abilities and overpowered characters, Ryomen Sukuna is one who stands entirely in a league of his own.
