According to a new rumor, Sega could be releasing a brand-newSonic the Hedgehoggame in 2024, along with new games in theJet Set,Comix Zone, andGuardian Heroesfranchises. Sega releases newSonic the Hedgehoggames on a regular basis, though the main series platformers took a hiatus after 2017’sSonic ManiaandSonic Forces.
As far as 2DSonic the Hedgehoggames go,Sonic Maniaearned a great deal of praise from fans and critics alike. 3D platformerSonic Forcesearned mixed to negative reviews by comparison. While newSonic-related media and games continued to release between 2017 and 2022, there were no new main series 2D or 3D platformers until 2022’sSonic Frontiers. Theopen worldSonic the Hedgehoggameearned mixed reviews from critics, but it certainly has its fans, and was even nominated for an award at The Game Awards 2022.

The nextSonic the Hedgehoggame isSonic Superstars, a 2D platformer with 4-player co-op.Sonic Superstarspreviewshave been largely positive so far, though time will tell if it lives up to fan expectations. In the meantime, it seems a newSonicgame is releasing at some point in 2024. This is according to leaker Im a Hero Too, who recently leaked some interesting Sega news. They didn’t share details about what the newSonic the Hedgehoggame would be like, but they did add thatJet Set,Comix Zone, andGuardian Heroeswill all get representation in 2024 in some capacity as well.
Assuming the leaked information is correct, one has to wonder what kind ofSonicgame Sega will be delivering in 2024. It’s possible it will be another 2DSonic the Hedgehoggame, though that would seem a little soon, what withSonic Superstarslaunching in October. A more likely scenario is that it’s aSonicspin-off game of some kind or adirect sequel toSonic Frontiers. Ultimately,Sonicfans will just have to wait and see if there’s any truth to the rumors and keep their expectations in check in the meantime.
The same leak also revealed some details about the future plans of Sega subsidiary Atlus. If the leaked information is to be believed,Persona 6is in developmentbut won’t be released in 2024 as some previously believed. Atlus is also said to have aPersonaparty game in development as well, but further details on that project were not shared by the leaker.
