Underwater exploration games are by no means rare in today’s day and age.Maneater, however, is a modern take on the genre that puts players in control of ayoung bull shark seeking revengeagainst a human hunter. In traditional action-RPG fashion, the shark must explore and grow stronger by venturing through an open world in the sea.

Within the many hours players are going to spend inManeater, there’s plenty to do for a growing shark likeeating wildlife and terrorizing humanson the path to finding the hunter Scaly Pete. But while navigating through the story, the lack of a visible save function will eventually lead to the question of how to do so. Thankfully, saving is a natural process that happens throughout the game.

Saving In-Game

As a game released in 2020,Maneaterplayers don’t have to worry about periodically pausing to save their progress. Instead, a save function automatically triggers after certain objectives are completed during the15 hour main story. Because of this, players can’t just decide the moment they’ve had enough ofManeaterfor one night and expect to come back at the exact same place. However, the auto-save does trigger frequently enough after most activities in-game.

Save Triggers

While going through the game’s 7 regions, some activities that trigger auto-saving include completing a main story or side mission, using a nearby grotto, orgetting upgradesto become the apex predator. As a rule, players are advised not to quit a session while in the middle of an objective since they will lose much of their unsaved progress. Once the task is done, however, leaving and coming back later will drop players right where they left off.

In the end, while a missing manual option might be jarring to some players, fully automated saves have their own benefits. Instead of pulling up the menu or backtracking to a predetermined location, the focus is instead on engaging in sport such asbiting off a human’s limbsand watching them bleed to death. This ultimately leads to several more hours in-game that aren’t spent on loading screens or looking at spinning icons like other titles.

Ultimately, saving is something that will happen as longManeaterplayers and the shark keep taking steps to become the strongest fish in the sea.

Maneateris available on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a later release date for the Switch.
