A live-actionBarbiefeature film has been in some stage of development long beforeWarner Bros.took on the project. At one point, comedian Amy Schumer was set to play Barbie andAnne Hathaway was poised to staras the iconic character after Schumer dropped out.

Fast-forward a few years later, and Mattel Films decided to revive theBarbieproject, with Warner Bros. distributing and Robbie attached to star and produce through her LuckyChap Entertainment production company. Although Deadline reports McKinnon is now set to join the film, details on her role remain unknown at this time. News of McKinnon’s casting comes shortly after it was announced that America Ferrera andSimu Liu had joined theBarbiecast, with the latter having just come off of his success with Marvel Studios’Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
McKinnon, Ferrera, and Liu are alsojoined by Ryan Gosling, who takes on the role of Barbie’s boyfriend Ken. Reportedly, Gosling had to pass on the role until a schedule change allowed him to sign onto the film. Details on the plot ofthe Barbiefilm are not available at this time, but the script was penned by Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach.
A live-actionBarbiefilm may seem like an odd and difficult property to adapt, but the talent behind and in front of the camera have proven themselves several times before. Gerwig’s work on Oscar-nominated films likeLady BirdandLittle Womendemonstrated her craft as a filmmaker and her ability to write compelling characters. Baumbach has similar experience with dramatic work on acclaimed films such asMarriage StoryandThe Meyerowitz Stories.
Still, it’s not clear what tone the live-actionBarbiefilm will be aiming for, be it comedic, dramatic, or both. Nonetheless, Robbie herself has shown she’s capable of delivering varied performances over the course of her career. FromThe Suicide SquadtoI, Tonya, there doesn’t appear to be any reason why fans should doubtBarbieis in capable hands with Robbie.
