Ghostbusters: Afterlifestar Mckenna Grace has just confirmed she’ll be returning for the film’s upcoming sequel. Given her pivotal involvement inAfterlife, it’s not exactly a major surprise to know that she’s coming back. But it could offer an idea of what audiences can expect from the follow-up.
The unnamedGhostbusterssequel, set to release late next year, was already confirmed some time ago. But little is known about it aside from a few teases here and there. Now, with Grace confirming her own involvement, viewers can at least rest easy knowing it appears to be following in the footsteps ofAfterlife’s successful release, with the Spengler family once again taking center stage. Grace herself, who plays Phoebe Spengler, seems pretty excited as well. But she also appears to be just as desperate for details as the fans.

“I’m constantly pressuring Jason Reitman, our director, I’m always trying to figure out what the story is,” Grace said in an interview withComicBook.com. “I literally have no ounce of a clue what the story is. If I knew about a Marvel film or if I knew aboutGhostbusters, I’d be sitting here and I’d be like, ‘I have no clue, and it’s driving me nuts.’ I’m just excited to do a second one. I’m just excited to be Phoebe.” Looks like the folks involved are intent on keeping a tight lid over the details.
Reitman recently teased a return to the original film’sNew York setting for theGhostbusters: Afterlifesequel, which certainly seems to fall in line with the franchise’s fan service focus lately. Featuring a story surrounding the legacy of Egon Spengler (played in the first 2 films by the late Harold Ramis), many felt that it overcorrected with the nostalgia in response to the divisive 2016 reboot film. But others seemed to enjoy it, with the prevailing opinion that it serves as a touching tribute to Ramis.
Grace herself has had a fairly successful career at such a young age. Aside fromGhostbusters: Afterlife, she’s also well known for her role as Mary in the 2017 filmGiftedand Esther Keyes in Hulu’sThe Handmaid’s Tale. However, she also holds an interesting trend of playing young versions of lead characters in various media. This includes a young Carol Danvers inCaptain Marvel, as well as a similar counterpart to Kiernan Shipka’s Sabrina Spellman inNetflix’sChilling Adventures of Sabrinaand to Margot Robbie’s Tonya Harding in 2017’sI, Tonya.
Things seem to be on track for the currentlyuntitledGhostbusters: Afterlifesequel, and with Grace on board, it looks as though it will continue following the trends that made the 2021 film a success. Here’s hoping fans (and Grace herself) can find out more in the coming months.
