It’s no secret that theMeta Quest 2, previously known as the Oculus Quest 2, is one of the most popular VR headsets on the market. It is currently cheaper than a PS5 or Xbox Series X, serves as a great entry point into VR, and has tons of interesting features, like the steam ability to usePC VR through Steamalongside the native store.
The VR market is not nearly as niche as many think, as many game developers praise the Quest 2 and this particular aspect of the industry has impressive sales, and more and more competition is emerging.Sony’s PS VR2is highly anticipated, for example, with the company showing off more and more of it as time moves on. With this competition in mind, it’s somewhat strange that Meta has announced a new price hike for the VR headset.

The official Meta Quest Twitter account has announced that its Quest 2 headsets will cost $100 more beginning on August 1. The Quest 2 128GB headset will now retail for $399.99, while the 256GB one will sale at $499.99. This is the same exact price point as thePS5 digital edition and standard edition, respectively, and it means the 256GB one is the same price as an Xbox Series X, while the 128GB one is more expensive than the Xbox Series S. The price of refurbished models and even accessories will be updated based on this new price, as well.
It should be noted that anyone who purchases a new Meta Quest 2 headset will also be able to grabBeat Saber, one of its most popular VR games, at no cost. However, this is only applicable through June 03, 2025, and “terms apply.” Many are unhappy with this price increase, and many have pointed out how this is a free $30 game coming alongside a $100 price hike. It doesn’t do much to justify the price, and there doesn’t seem to be any other bonuses either.
The price hike takes place in a matter of days, and for many, it comes across as very random. Many of the comments are very critical of this decision, especially since it is the same exact headset as it would be if someone bought it right now, $100. Meta’s simple explanation is that thisQuest 2price hike was decided “in order to continue investing in moving the VR industry forward for the long term.” Needless to say, many are not buying the explanation.
