InMetroid Prime, players are able to obtain 21 upgrades to Samus' suit, each providing new utility and aiding them in exploring the game world. In true Metroidvania fashion, this often requires players to backtrack, visiting older areas with newly acquired gear so that they can open new paths.

After acquiring the Spider Ball upgrade from Thardus in the Quarantine Cave, players ofMetroid Primeare finally able to acquire the Ice Beam, an upgrade that appears in most of the Metroid games. This high-damage weapon deals additional damage to fire-based enemies and freezes most enemies on contact. It can also be used to open white doors. Please note that this guide to locating the Ice Beam does not feature any additional collectibles or side paths that can be taken along the way, though the related guide below has players covered if that’s what they’re looking for.

Step 1: Get to the Chozo Ruins Energy Core

Players hoping to get hold of the Ice Beamwill need to get to the Chozo Ruins Energy Core first. From the Save Station in the Chozo Ruins Gathering Hall, players will need to head through the door to the East Atrium, reachable via some nearby platforms. From there, they can head to the Energy Core, where they can find a door leading to the Furnace.

Step 2: Use the Spider Ball to reach the Hall of Elders

On entering the Furnace, players should look for a Spider Ball track and use it to reach a Morph Ball Segment.Navigate across the disappearing blocks to reach a larger section of the furnace, then morph ball through the tunnel under some Chozo Lore to get into Crossway Access West.

Carry on to the Crossway, use the Half-Pipe to climb up on the left side of the room, where a destructible Cordite Statue can be found next to a door. Head through the door near the statue and into the Hall of Elders. There’s a missile refill station here, just through a Morph Ball tunnel, and jumping down will trigger a fight with a Chozo Ghost.

Step 3: Reach the Reflecting Pool

After defeating the Chozo Ghost, players can use the statue in its room to launch themselves up to a Spider Ball track. They just have touse the morph ball while standing on the Statue’s hands, and it’ll launch them upward. Ride the track to a new section with a Morph Ball slot. Bombing this slot causes three more to appear, which can be reached by jumping up to, and past the Missile Refill Station. Hit the purple one with a Wave Beam and drop a bomb in it to open the path to the Reflecting Pool. Get thrown by the statue again and follow the new path, scanning a terminal along the way to drop a shield and arriving at the Reflecting Pool.

Enter the reflecting pool and bomb the grate to drain it, then use the Half-Pipe to Boost Ball up to the second floor of the room. Doors on either side lead to a save room and an Antechamber containing the Ice Beam, respectively.
