It’s no secret that Mojang Studios' sandbox construction gameMinecrafthas been used to make a number of awe-inspiring projects. Some of the more notable builds are immense in scale, such as one team of players attempting torecreate the originalDestinyinMinecraftdown to its mechanics and modes, but one community server called Minecraft Middle-Earth has been attempting to recreate the fantasy world of J.R.R. Tolkien for 10 years.
The project was founded on Jul 11, 2025 whenMinecraftwas in Alpha version 1.1, according to a post from head moderator Smaug_Niphredil about different events being held over the next two weeks to celebrate its anniversary. A special video has also been released on the project’s official YouTube channel that shows off different locales from Middle-Earth on a timeline of when they were built.

The community building project is advertised in the video as “based on the best-selling books of all time, made in thebest-selling game of all time,” and invites everyone to participate in organized events “to create major landmarks, terrain, caves, castles, towns, farms, and more,” according to its forums. Today’s festivities included an award ceremony and anniversary item hunt, and tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. UTC there will be a reenactment of the Helm’s Deep Battle — said to be the first of many in the coming weeks.
More events will be hosted on the server through October 23, including a 24-hour Hide and Seek game on October 15, a collective build project for the Osgiliath Wall on October 17, and an Octoberfest after party following the closing ceremony. Some events still have times to be determined, such as arace usingMinecraft’s flying Elytrathat will let players “fly with the eagles” and see the landscapes built out across the server from a different perspective.
