The spread of the novel coronavirus is understandably causing a rise in anxiety the world over. Luckily, video games are there to offer a modicum of catharsis during these difficult times. Embracing this,Mortal Kombatcreator Ed Boon is making the most of his platform on Twitter. The creative director forMortal Kombat 11shared a fun meme today featuring franchise favorite Scorpion. Even Scorpion is doing his part to help inform the public about necessary coronavirus precautions.

The meme in question features a photo ofScorpionwhich, at first glance, might be taken as completely normal. A closer inspection reveals that Scorpion isn’t wearing his normal mask, but rather a health mask to protect from potentially spreading viruses. At the top of the meme are the words “STAY OVER THERE!” a joke reversing Scorpion’s usual catchphrase, “Get Over Here!” Scorpion’s encouraging people to keep a recommended distance between each other so that they protect themselves from the potential spread of the coronavirus.

The meme is perhaps in response to anotherMortal Kombatimage that’s been making the rounds online. It’s an animated gif that featuresSub-Zerogoing through some of his basic animations fromMortal Kombat 2. Except instead of punching enemies or casting ice spells, Sub-Zero is washing his hands and then using a hands-free hand dryer. If even theMortal Kombatprotagonists are taking important precautions, then others should too.

Both images are all in good fun, of course. They focus on simple, smart ideas like washing your hands, wearing a mask, and keeping distance between people. Addingvideo game charactersto the mix makes the images more relatable and fun. Some might consider it making light of the situation, but people can likely agree that a bit of levity given the gravity of the situation is welcome if not necessary.

TheMortal Kombatfranchise has already been impacted by the spread of thenovel coronavirus. This past week NetherRealm Studios announced that it would not longer allow a live audience for itsMortal Kombat 11Final Kombat 2020 tournament. The tournament ran on March 8. NetherRealm Studios is likely also considering having as many employees as possible work from home, like many other studios across the industry. As Scorpion encourages, sometimes staying home and playing someMortal Kombatis the best option.

Mortal Kombat 11is available now on Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
