Ms. Marvelchanged the course of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in many ways. Not only did it introduce the first female South Asian and Muslim superhero into the fold, it also teased the inevitable initiation of mutants, and possibly Inhumans. Considering Kamala Khan’s background, some of her story takes place in Karachi as part of the Disney Plus series. But, fans already know that those scenes were filmed in Thailand. The series’ cinematographer Jules O’Loughlin has now revealed some behind-the-scenes secrets of the shoot, and how it was brought to life.
TheMultiverse is now real in the MCU, and while it wasn’t directly referenced inMs. Marvel, it seemingly played a huge role in bringing an important piece of Kamala’s history to life. One moment that is groundbreaking in the series is when Kamala arrives in Pakistan, visits the train station in Karachi, and comes in contact with the Red Dagger. However, this train station does not look like the one in the real world, an observation that fans from the city would have made, and O’Loughlin used the Multiverse as a justification.

When picking a location for the Karachi Railway Station, O’Loughlin and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker who was born in the metropolitan Pakistani city, had a bit of a creative difference. In an interview withComicbook.com, O’Loughlin revealed that when he found a location in Bangkok that had a similar vibe to the train station in Karachi, the director was hesitant because it looked nothing like the one in her home city. “It’s really important for Sharmeen that it’s true to the Karachi Railway Station,” he revealed, which is when he brought the Multiverse into the picture.
Withparallel universes existing at once, O’Loughlin thought it was the perfect idea to justify his choice. He told Obaid-Chinoy that the set he had selected could just be a different version of Karachi, in an alternate universe. “It’s not exactly Karachi, but added a lot of production value to that sequence. And thank God for the Multiverse,” he said. But, that’s not all. Once Thailand was finalized as the location of choice, the team also had to deal with an epic storm in one of the cities.
While filming in Pattaya, the shoot had to be paused due to monsoon rains. “It was the biggest storm I think I’ve ever been in, and it almost washed our set of the way. And it closed us down for about five hours,” he stated. This affected the scene they were filming on that specific day, and while O’Loughlin didn’t confirm what segment it was, he did hope that it was one day they could get back. “We had a lot of fun, but we did lose a lot of time.”
