Wednesdayhas dropped a new trailer for the upcoming dark and irreverent Netflix series. It features the reveal of Uncle Fester, who will be portrayed by Fred Armisen, and teases Christina Ricci’s role within the series.
Wednesdayis Tim Burton’s take onThe Addams Family.Set to premiere November 23 on Netflix, the series will explore Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega)as she is sent off to Nevermore Academy, a place where misfits and oddballs gather to learn and congregate with their own kind. The series seeks to explore Wednesday as she’s rarely been explored: as a teenage girl among her peers. With Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia and Luis Guzman as Gomez, the series will feature a fresh, updated take on the creepy, kooky family.

The trailer, posted onNetflix’s Twitteraccount, reveals the clearest look atWednesdayyet. The trailer particularly shows offJenna Ortega’s version of Wednesday. “I act as if I don’t care if people dislike me,” Ortega’s Wednesday intones in a voiceover. “Deep down… I actually enjoy it.” The character is just as dark and cantankerous as previous renditions of the character. She does smile once, however: when Uncle Fester is revealed. As played by Fred Armisen, Fester looks just as he always does: pale, with dark circles under his eyes, with a mischief about his character that makes him adored by the other members of the Addams family. This version also appears to have a slightly different take on the character’s ability to make light bulbs light up in his mouth: he seems to have full-on electric abilities.
The trailer shows off other supernatural incidents at Nevermore Academy. The series appears to tackle these elements ofThe Addams Familywith greater focus than other adaptations, in which they are confined to the background. As Nevermore Academy is explored, Wednesday says, “There’s just something wrong about this place. Not just because it’s a school.” She explains that the Academy has “Secret societies, hidden libraries, [and] a homicidal monster”. Wednesday’s relationship with her roommate, Enid (Emma Meyers) is also highlighted. As isChristina Ricci, who appears late in the trailer; her character is revealed to be a mousy woman named Marylin Thornhill who asks Wednesday how her time with Enid at Nevermore is going. In classic Wednesday fashion, she simply responds that Enid is suffocating, and she hopes to repay the favor when Enid’s sleeping.
ThefirstWednesdaytrailerwas unveiled back in August, and served as a cursory glance at the series. This new trailer appears to better represent whatWednesdayis all about: supernatural happenings and a twist on the coming-of-age genre. Wednesday appears determined not to fit in - in fact, notfitting in among her peers is a point of pride for her. It’s a unique twist on the standard formula; hopefully the series continues with this theme throughout.
A deeper look into the supernatural elements inherent toThe Addams Familyis also promising. What exactly the Addams family are has often been hinted at - there appears to be a grander subculture of misfits related to them, and it looks like the series will be a deep dive into that aspect of the franchise.
Wednesdayhits Netflix on November 23.
