Game Builder Garageonly released days ago, but some fans have already mastered the game creation tool and created impressive projects, some of them inspired by Nintendo properties. One such fan has re-created the gameplay ofSuper Mario Kart, nearly thirty years afterSuper Mario Kart’s release.
Therecently-releasedGame Builder Garageis a Nintendo Switch-exclusive suite of creative tools focused on letting amateur game developers easily and quickly create games. The suite offers all the tools needed to create new game experiences or re-create existing ones, and some Nintendo fans are paying tribute to their favorite games by making versions of them inGame Builder Garage.

Twitter user ZeldaBoi1 took it upon themself to re-createSuper Mario Kart, complete with the 2D sprites originally used out of hardware limitations. The results are impressively close to the original, though with some extra embellishments like real-time shadows for the Kart driver. The re-creation is available to download withGame Builder Garage’s code-based sharing system, and could be a fun way forMario Kart 8players to spend some time while theywait forMario Kart 9.
An update was released after the initial version to allow the player to reverse, as well as the already existing moveset of acceleration, drifting and changing racers. Nintendo fans have been especially active withMario Kartfan content recently, with another fan not long ago making an impressivemockup of the fictionalPaper Mario Kart. ZeldaBoi1’sGame Builder Garageversion ofSuper Mario Kartis especially impressive, given that the game creation tool has only been out for a few days.
Especially considering Nintendo’s recent push withMario Kartcontent such asMario Kart Live, fans of the series are eager to see a new entry. WhileSuper Mario Karton Nintendo Switch Onlineis another game from that series that fans can enjoy,Game Builder Garagewill give fans a new opportunity to create their ownMario Kartexperiences while they wait for official news from Nintendo. GivenMario Kart’s dedicated fanbase, the possibilities are somewhat expansive, with some kind of multiplayer adaptation being a likely next step.
Nintendo fans, time and again, truly go above and beyond on their fan projects. Even with the impressiveGame Builder Garagecreations already available, there will no doubt be many more in the future. Still, many players who don’t own a Switch may feel like they are missing out, but fortunatelyalternative game creation tools are availableon a variety of systems.
