It is rumored that Cameron Monaghan, the actor who playsStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s Cal Kestis, has reportedly signed on to reprise the role in a live-action capacity. There is no word on whether this project would adaptStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, its sequelStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, or another part of Cal’s life. The supposed project is still only a rumor at this point, and as such it should be taken lightly, but it is interesting to consider what such a project would entail.

Obi-Wan Kenobion Disney+ recently aired its season finale, and news about whether it will receive a sequel is perhaps left to the reception of fans. But for anyone who has playedStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, there are striking similarities in story beats featured throughoutObi-Wan Kenobi. These beats are perhaps too close to be incidental, which may imply that arumored live-actionStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderprojectmight not be an adaptation of the game’s story and events, if true.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Story Beats Echoed in Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi-Wan Kenobifeatures a lot of nuanced arcs that fans may not have anticipated, such as how pivotal a role is given to a young Leia. In many ways,Obi-Wan Kenobibridges the divide betweenRevenge of the SithandA New Hope, offering clarification to some lingering continuity questions while raising more to consider. However, embedded in these moments of nostalgia and character development are inarguable references toStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. But without any clear connection toFallen Orderitself,Obi-Wan Kenobiseems to exploit these story beats and use them as its own.

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s main premise echoes that ofStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, where Obi-Wan has either seemingly lost his connection to the Force or is simply trying not to expose himself as a Jedi while the Inquisitors search for him. This is precisely where players find Cal. Still, this premise may have been unavoidable due toStar Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderandObi-Wan Kenobi’s shared erainStar Wars, but a number of other key moments and concepts are also matched. For example, Obi-Wan finally uses the Force to slow Leia’s fall, similar to how Cal slows Prauf’s fall on Bracca.

Moreover, the Third Sister Reva Sevander is revealed to be an ex-Padawan. This is probably common amongStar Wars' Inquisitors, but still mirrors the plight and origin of the Second Sister Trilla Suduri, only without Reva’s Master having given her up to the Empire. Obi-Wan swims to infiltrate Nur’s Fortress Inquisitorius exactly like Cal does, and Obi-Wan even stalls the walkway’s glass from shattering as water pours in, like Darth Vader is forced to use the Force on water pouring in during the conclusion toStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Could Inform The Rumored Fallen Order Series' Story Ideas

Because of these references and more, if a live-action project with Monaghan’s Cal is truly in the works it will likely not followthe events ofStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. This may not have been the case anyway, since Monaghan looks decidedly older than Cal duringStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, but it would be even more of a strange choice now thatObi-Wan Kenobihas already taken many of its story beats.

It would be redundant for a live-action adaptation of the game to follow through with its own original storyline because of this, but there are still a ton of potential avenues that Disneycould take Cal in live-action. Making a prequel series would surely be out of the question, again due to Monaghan’s age, but there may bea purposeful lapse betweenStar Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderandStar Wars Jedi: Survivorthat this rumored project could play with.

It will definitely be interesting to hear more about when and where this series would take place if it is ever confirmed, but until thenfans can continue to anticipateStar Wars Jedi: Survivorreleasing next year. It is unfortunate, though, thatStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderwould seemingly not be able to tell its own story in a dedicated adaptation without appearing identical toObi-Wan Kenobi.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Could Lend Itself Well to a Game Adaptation

Just like howStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderand Cal Kestis may be making the jump from games to live-action, it is entirely possible thatObi-Wan Kenobiand its eponymous protagonist make the opposite jump.Obi-Wan is no stranger toStar Warsgames, even having a tiny cameo inStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and there are several important lapses before and afterObi-Wan Kenobithat a game’s story could tackle.

Further, comments suggested that Obi-Wan might becomeStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s protagonistbefore it was later confirmed that Cal would return. It’s certainly not outside the realm of possibility to believe Obi-Wan may receive his own game in the future, perhaps tying in directly with the Disney Plusseries. That said,Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderwas a huge breath of fresh air because of how original it is, presenting new faces in new locations, and gameplay that absorbed different genres.

The argument could be made thatStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderdoes not even need a live-action adaptation due to how cinematic it already is, and the same will likely be said aboutStar Wars Jedi: Survivor.Star Wars Jedi: Survivorseems to be continuing in its predecessor’s footstepsby offering originality in a franchise that cannot help itself but regurgitate legacy characters, especially at the expense of story beats that are taken from original experiences.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
