Since its acquisition by Microsoft, Obsidian Entertainment has proven itself to be a powerhouse for the company. It has, since then, announced huge and highly anticipated RPGs likeAvowedandThe Outer Worlds 2, while also supporting theearly access release ofGrounded. The first is a first-person RPG comparable toSkyrim,it seems, whileThe Outer Worlds 2is expanding beyond the first title. Yet, while Obsidian is known for RPGs,Groundedwas a sandbox survival that took off.

Pentimentis another RPG coming fromObsidian Entertainment, but it’s not quite like its others. It is a historical narrative adventure RPG, set in 16th century Bavaria, where players investigate the murder of a prominent figure. Apparently, the game takes place over 25 years where players must deduce who the murderer is/was, while solving other crimes and conspiracies. It seems the game never confirms who the killer is, instead leaving it up to the player.Pentimenthas been confirmed as a day one Xbox Game Pass game set for 2022, but now Obsidian has confirmed its release date as November 15.

Fans will want to keep up with forthcoming information about the game, as more will be revealed as November closes in. It seems to be laying heavily into its RPG elements, with choice and consequence at the forefront, but this isn’t really surprising. Not only is this an Obsidian Entertainment title, but it’s theproject that Josh Sawyerhas been working on personally for some time. He oversees a few games at Obsidian, but this was his personal project.

For the unitiated, Josh Sawyer is known for his work onIcewind Dale, thecreation ofPillars of Eternity, and perhaps most notable,Fallout: New Vegas. It may be a far cry from the same stylization asNew Vegas, but this should be exciting for fans nonetheless. After all, it’s Obsidian and Josh Sawyer once again breaking the mold and pursuing their passions.

As we wrote in our recentpreview ofPentiment, “What makesPentimentso exciting is how focused and unique it is already shaping up to be. There hardly exists an easy point of reference for a historical game that looks and plays like this. It isn’t a traditional RPG in the Obsidian style, but it’s in those few RPG systems it has wherePentimentsets itself apart from many narrative games likeNight in the Woods,a game that Sawyer points to as an inspiration.”

Pentimentlaunches November 15 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
