Oberyn Martell’s death scene remains one ofGame of Thrones' most memorable moments. While Pedro Pascal was happy to reenact the scene with fans for selfie purposes, this led to real-world problems for the actor.
InGame of Thrones, Pascal’s Oberyn Martell arrives in King’s Landing to attend King Joffrey’s wedding. After Joffrey is fatally poisoned,Tyrion Lannister is accused of murderand faces an unfair trial orchestrated by his sister and Joffrey’s mother, Cersei. Tyrion requests a trial by combat, in which two competitors will duel to the death to determine if Tyrion is found guilty. While Tyrion initially struggles to find a champion to face Cersei’s chosen fighter, Gregor Clegane, Oberyn Martell volunteers to fight for Tyrion. While Oberyn seemingly wins the fight, his desire to get Clegance to confess to murdering his sister and her children on the orders of Tyrion’s father, Tywin Lannister, results in a wounded Clegane gouging Oberyn’s eyes and crushing his skull.

DuringThe Hollywood Reporter’s roundtable discussion with Jeff Bridges, Kieran Culkin, Damson Idris, Michael Imperioli, and Evan Peters, Pascal recalled how recreating hisGame of Thronesdeath scenefor selfies with fans had consequences. “I remember, earlier on, because of Game of Thrones and the way my character died… people were super into taking selfies with their thumbs in my eyes,” Pascal said. “And at first, I was so earnest and happy about the success of the character in the show, and I would let them! And I remember getting a bit of an eye infection and then I stopped.”
Game of Thronesfan interactions have a mixed history. While most interactions between fans and theGame of Thronescast members are seemingly pleasant, the passionate fan base can go overboard. For instance,Game of Thronesstar Faye Marsaystepped away from social media after her role as The Waif received backlash from fans because of how the character treated fan-favorite Arya Stark. Conversely, Joffrey actor Jack Gleeson said rumors of negative fan interactions resulted in most people being friendly to him despite hating hisGame of Thronescharacter. However, Pascal’s story is seemingly a cautionary tale about hygiene rather than an example of ill intentioned-fans.
With roles as Din Djarin inThe Mandalorianand Joel in HBO’sThe Last of Us,Pascal may be the ultimate franchise actor. So, while Pascal seemingly no longer allows fans to recreate hisGame of Thronesdeath scene, there is no shortage of other memorable moments to reenact if they want a creative selfie with the actor.
