Summary
A brief showcase ofPersona 5: The Phantom Xhas revealed a brand-new feature, allowing the player character Wonder to wear different outfits outside of the Metaverse. In the past three mainlinePersonagames, the party usually stuck to a certain outfit to wear in-game, sometimes only wearing one or two depending on the story or event. Sometimes players would get access to alternate costumes to dress their party in, like withPersona 5’s DLC costumes orPersona 4 Golden’s costume store. These are only cosmetic changes, however, and can only be worn when exploring the game’s variety of dungeons.
Persona 5: The Phantom Xis a mobile and PC spin-offthat was first announced back in March, where Atlus is partnering with Perfect World Games and Black Wings Game Studio for an exclusive release in China. Players will embody the role of Wonder, a new Phantom Thief, where they seek to change the hearts of the villains and conquer their Palaces that have formed in the Metaverse. It aims to keep the same gameplay loop of the original game, now adapted into a mobile gaming experience. There have been a variety of changes made to the formula, though, such as the ability to wear different casual clothes outside the Metaverse.

This feature was highlighted by Twitter user Faz, who posted some GIFs ofPhantom Xprotagonist Wonderhaving different outfits that he can wear outside of the Metaverse, likely being his casual clothes. One outfit is his default yellow jacket, white shirt, and striped pants, with the other being a gray jacket with black slacks. One GIF showed Wonder in Tokyo, where he is wearing the second outfit, with a third one showing how he can access his closet to change clothes to wear. The third GIF shows another outfit where he has exchanged his jacket for a black-and-white hoodie.
Much likethe equippable costumes inPersona 5, these appear to be cosmetic changes, though unlike the costumes, the outfits can be worn outside of the Metaverse. That being said, there are some parts ofPhantom Xthat show Wonder wearing his default outfit in pre-rendered 2D anime cutscenes. While it’s possible that the scenes shown so far are before he unlocks the wardrobe, some fans are curious if there will be more 2D animated scenes that will default to his starting outfit.
A lot of thePhantom X’s cutscenes show the game being rendered in-engine outside the Metaverse, so it’s possible that Wonder’s outfits could be reflected in these cases. The second beta ofPersona 5: The Phantom Xwill be starting later this August, so some fans might get a chance to see how the outfits function in real-time.
Persona 5: The Phantom Xis currently in development for PC and Mobile devices.
