In a new post on the r/Pokemon subreddit, user quinn_thomas shared a screenshot of the entry for the Psychic Pokemon Gothitelle inPokemon Scarlet. Gothitelle is one of the manyclassic Pokemonthat made their return inPokemon Scarlet and Violetalongside a slew of brand-new catchable creatures. Reading more like a page from a cosmic horror novel than aPokemongame, the unsettling Pokedex entry for Gothitelle states that it uses a blast of psychic energy to show its opponents “ethereal and beautiful” dreams of the end of the universe. The entry inPokemon Violetis no less horrifying, reading in part that “It acts somewhat detached because it has seen the end of all existence.”

Accompanied by a picture of a terrified man and joking text about being shown the heat death of the universe by Gothitelle, the post was met with a mix of humor and horror byPokemon Scarlet and Violetfans. Making light of the depressing special ability, one Reddit user quipped that “It puts the goth in Gothitelle” while another joked that the Psychic Pokemon gave their Crocalor an ego death. Making a connection to the storyline fromPokemon Legends: Arceus, one user wondered if Arceus would rebuild the universe after the end foreseen by Gothitelle.

In a video game franchise known for its cartoonish visuals and family-friendly vibe, the horrifying special ability for Gothitelle feels almost comically out of place. No matter how ethereal and beautiful it may be, seeing the end of the universe doesn’t sound like a pleasant experience. For gamers feeling a bit overwhelmed by the cosmic horror of Gothitelle’s special ability, aMinior hot chocolate bombcould be just the thing needed to chase the existential dread away.
