Summary

Game Freak seems to have found a formula for a hit new type ofPokemongame after the success ofPokemon Legends: Arceus, and the developer will likely want to ride the game’s success with a sequel. However, this sequel will need to match the in-depth nature of the lore presented inPokemon Legends: Arceus, and to do that, it is going to need a solid mascot critter on the same level as Arceus. If this sequel is set in the Kanto Region, there is already one clear choice as to which mon could fill this role.

TheKanto Regionis iconic amongPokemonfans as the home of the original 151 mons, and its Legendaries and Mythicals make up some of the most recognizable creatures in the franchise. Discovering Legendaries like Zapdos in the Power Plant or Mewtwo in Cerulean Cave for the first time can be an exhilarating feeling. As the series has gone on, the lore behind these Legendaries has gotten a bit muddy compared to more recent mainline titles, so aPokemon LegendsKanto game that can tie them all back together under one mascot mon would be a much-need inclusion for the franchise.

Mew Would be the Most Likely Mythical Mascot of a Pokemon Legends Kanto

WhileArceus' loredepicts it as the creator god of thePokemonworld, most modern critters can trace their ancestry back to the mythical Mew according to the established lore. As such, Mew makes the most sense to appear as the central Legendary or Mythical for aPokemon LegendsKanto game. Not only is Mew likely the most famous Mythical in the franchise, it was also the first to be created, and first revealed in 1996 less than two months after the originalPokemon Red and Greenwere released in Japan, making this mon a worthy contender to take the torch from Arceus.

According to reports that can be found in the Pokemon Mansion on Cinnabar Island, Mew was first discovered 20 years prior to the events of the Gen 1 games in Guyana, South America. WithMew’s ability to learn every moveand transform at will, it is theorized that Mew contains the DNA of all Pokemon and is the ancestor of all modern mons. This theory presents a strong foundation for the plot of aPokemon LegendsKanto game which could portray an encounter with Mew that even predates the one known about from the Pokemon Mansion reports.

Mew’s in-universe lore is a little bit of a mess since it originated from a time when thePokemonuniverse hadn’t become a separate world from the real one. APokemon Legends Kantogame would be the perfect opportunity to retcon its lore to fit more in line with the rest of the franchise in the time since. Perhaps rather than discovering Mew in South America, this game could depict a version of events where the player works with an organization similar to theGalaxy Expedition Teamwho are chasing reports of an elusive, unknown mon throughout a past version of the Kanto Region that turns out to be Mew.

Since Mewtwo wasn’t created in an attempt to clone Mew until a later date, it’s unlikely that Mewtwo would be present in aPokemon LegendsKanto game. However, this game could depict an organization intent on studying Mew as a precursor to the scientists who eventually try to clone Mew, giving Mewtwo at least some kind of acknowledgment in-game. Additionally, the Legendary Birds Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres could play a similar role to that ofAzelf, Uxie, and Mesprit inPokemon Legends: Arceuswhere players must earn their approval before being allowed to encounter Mew.

Pokemon Legends: Arceusis available for Nintendo Switch.
