For those who want a change from playing as Leon Kennedy, a recent mod for the remake ofResident Evil 4allows fans to step into the metaphorical shoes of one of the franchise’s most iconic Tyrants, Nemesis. WithSilent Hill 2being remade by Bloober Teamand hopefully coming out soon, not to mention the reimagining ofDead Spacethat launched earlier this year, horror gaming is in something of a golden age of bringing back classic entries in the genre.

One of the notable things about Capcom’s ongoing franchise is the onslaught of formidable foes that have tested the player’s mettle over the years.Resident Evilis known for its roster of powerful enemies, from the T-002 Tyrant variant as seen in the original 1996 game to the unforgettable matriarch Lady Dimitrescu from 2021’sVillage. Fans will have their favorites, of course, but there is one that often sticks out in some people’s minds, and now it’s possible to play as him in theRE4remake.

On Nexus Mods, user Dimenarius has made it possible forResident Evil 4players to take on the role of Nemesis, specifically the version of him from the remake ofRE3. The mod swaps out Leon Kennedy for the Tyrant’s character model, allowing the adversary to become the hero of the story instead of the villain. However, the description doesn’t say whether Dimenarius' mod keeps Leon’s original dialog. It’s obviously a little bit jarring to see this monster be the one to rescue Ashley Graham from the clutches of Lord Saddler, but the great thing about modding is it allows players to experience games in new and interesting ways.

Resident Evil 4modders have been busysince the remake came out not long ago. There is already a slew of ways to tinker with the vanilla format on PC, whether it’s extending the opening village sequence, replacing Leon with a more classicRElook, or improving the visuals and overall experience. It will be interesting to see whether anyone else inserts a different playable Tyrant intoRE4.

It’s no secret thatResident Evilhas had a huge impact on horror gaming, influencing many other titles and studios that came after it, includingSilent Hill. With the success of the recent remake, as well as a ninth installment said to be in development, things are continuing to look up for the series that helped define survival horror in the early days.

Resident Evil 4is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
