Apex Legendsplayers on console have been treated well by Respawn Entertainment. The battle royale game features a locked 60fps on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which is as smooth as gaming gets on the current generation consoles. Perhaps that makesApex Legendsfans a little greedy, because now they’re hoping for even more on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, and while Respawn initially seemed to shut early speculation down, it has now offered some renewed hope.
On Friday, a fan messaged Respawn Entertainment’s Design Director Jason McCord on Twitter. McCord was asked about the60FPS lock on the PS4 and Xbox Oneand if this will “be uncapped in future to go higher?” McCord’s response was, “Nope.” He’s elaborate that the lock allowed Respawn to establish a much more consistent frame rate, where otherwise the game would have spikes and valleys of frames.Apex Legendsfans took this question to contextually be aboutApex Legends' eventual release on next-gen consoles, to their disappointment.

Luckily, McCord quickly picked up on the misinterpretation of his response. In a follow-up tweet, McCord clarified that his response was specific to the PS4 and Xbox One.Apex Legendson the current generation consoles won’t be getting any improvements to its frame rate, not that anyone really expected that it would. With the generation coming to a close, it doesn’t behooveRespawnto revisit that decision. Plus, it’s not like Respawn’s going to find extra console performance hidden away.
BeforeApex Legendsfans take McCord’s comments as disappointing news about next-gen consoles, don’t fret just yet. McCord goes on to clarify that while his comment specifically isn’t related about next-gen support forApex Legends, that doesn’t mean Respawn’s made a decision yet. It doesn’t mean much of anything yet, and McCord makes clear that Respawn has not announced anything regardingApex Legendson next-gen consoles, so he doesn’t have any news to share on that front.
That means thatApex Legendsmay or may not get the kind of improvements fans would love to see on PS5 and Xbox Series X, as both the PS5 and theXbox Series X support frame rates up to 120FPS. It’s definitely a possibility Respawn will reach that, but by no means a guarantee.
As noted, Respawn has not yet announcedApex Legendsfor either PS5 or Xbox Series X. Presumably, it’s something Respawn is working hard on and could announce at any time. It’s unclear what Respawn is waiting for, but that time is likely to be sooner rather than later.
Apex Legendsis available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
