There’s a chance that Rian Johnson’sKnives OutandGlass Onionexist in the same universe as his new Peacock seriesPoker Face. But how they share that existence may not be how some would expect.
By now, tons of viewers have already had the delight of witnessing Netflix’sGlass Onion: A Knives Out Mysteryand its many cameos, one of which featured Natasha Lyonne during a particularly hilarious Zoom game ofAmong Uswith Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc. She shared theKnives Out 2scene with huge stars like the late legendary actress Angela Lansbury, musical theatre icon Stephen Sondheim, and even basketball great-turned-actor and writer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. But this left many wondering if this had anything to do with Lyonne’s upcoming lead role inPoker Face.

There is a connection, but it’s not as cut and dry as one might think. Speaking withScreen Rant, Johnson clarified how Lyonne’s cameo came about and what it signified. “Well, you want to hear a twisted web? Try and untangle this,” he offered. “She is Natasha in that she’s in her trailer on the set ofPoker Face. If you look at her background, it’s her trailer. She’s in between takes when we’re shootingPoker Face. I just said, ‘Get on the Zoom real quick and do it.’ So, I have no idea how you untangle that. I guess in theGlass Onionuniverse,Poker Faceis a show that’s being shot. I’ll have an episode ofPoker Face[in] the background in the next Benoit Blanc mystery, maybe.”
Knives OutandGlass Onionhave been shown to exist in a pretty grounded universe, despite the implications of the sequel’s fiery climax. This means that they take place in the real, modern world. The murder mysteries involved tend to be a bit extravagant, but they’re never based on something that couldn’t exist in reality. That may be wherePoker Facediffers, however, asLyonne’s lead character Charlie sports an unusual abilityas a human lie detector, which could stretch the limits of plausibility. So perhaps a crossover between her and Benoit Blanc isn’t in the cards.
As much asGlass Onionloved its Easter eggs, not all of them have a significant meaning behind them. That’s a shame because it would have been cool to see Blanc’s eccentric but efficient deductive and inductive methods clash with Charlie’s likely far more messy style of crime-solving. It would be like Sherlock Holmes meeting Columbo, where two radically different but equally effective minds discover the same conclusions from wildly varied directions.
Still, Johnson loves his Easter eggs, so this may not be the last of Lyonne that viewers see in this particular universe. If not that, then perhaps there’s still a chance thatBenoit Blanc could meet The Muppets. Oddly enough, that one seems more plausible.
