Fans of the vehicular soccer video gameRocket Leaguehave some major changes to look forward to as a date has been announced for when the game will beofficially going free-to-play.
Announced by Nintendo on Twitter, the free-to-play change means the game will no longer require a purchase for those who have yet to playRocket Leagueand are looking to try the mega hit sports title. The change will apply to all platformsRocket Leagueis available on.

The announcement of the game going free-to-play isn’t the only good news for fans ofRocket League. Earlier this month, Psyonix announced that Nintendo Switch andPlayStation players will not be required to have a subscriptionto their console’s online service in order to playRocket Leagueonline. The news isn’t surprising as free-to-play games on both consoles haven’t required an online subscription for some time but Xbox One owners are currently out of luck due to Microsoft’s policies on multiplayer games requiring a Gold subscription.
Announced in July, developer Psyonix’s push for free-to-play isn’t the only big change coming to the popular multiplayer game. This fallRocket Leaguewill receive a major update that intends to make the game easier to digest for beginners. Major front menu changes will occur along with more streamlined teaching tools as the developer expects a whole new group of players to try the game once the free-to-play change occurs, possibly breakingthe peak player countrecord set earlier this year.
Rocket Leaguehas hit a major stride in 2020. Since the impact of Covid-19 many fans have been stuck at home with nowhere to go making the game a popular go-to for fans to connect with friends they are unable to see. The game’s popularity even caught the attention of the BBC, which resulted inBBC airingRocket League’s Esport,TheRocket LeagueSpring Series, on television.
Rocket League’s success may be the result of Psyonix’s willingness to evolve the game in some significant ways since its release in 2015. The game has undergone some major changes that have impacted the player progress, loot output, and match types, keeping things fresh for the dedicated fan base that is continuously growing. Latelast year loot boxes were finally removed fromRocket Leagueafter critical response from the fan base. In addition,Rocket Leaguewill see some major changes to the career mode with a new update this fall.
