While WB Games Montreal gave players the chance to work as a team inside the Bat-Family centricGotham Knights, the studio may have inadvertently let it slip its next game set within the DC Comics universe will be single-player. The studio now has experience to pull from if true, though all the experience with DC Comics characters has been withinBatman’s corner of the universe. If the next game does turn out to be single-player, it then becomes a question of if the studio will stay with in the familiar landscape of Gotham City or venture out to other corners and characters of the universe.
Gotham Knightswas the second major DC Comics title from WB Games Montreal, the first being the 2013 prequel to Rocksteady’sBatman: Arkhamseries,Batman: Arkham Origins. WhileArkham Originswas a single-player driven experience,Gotham Knightsallowed two players to team-up with the choice to defend Gotham City as Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl, or Robin in the wake of Batman’s apparent death. The game also featured a roster of iconic villains to battle over the course of the game including Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and the Court of Owls.

As for what the future holds for WB Games Montreal, a new report from Twisted Voxel pointed out the studio’s corporate site and job listings may have given away some details about its nextDC Comics game. The first is it will be another single-player experience, going back to the studio’s roots in triple-A game development withArkham Origins. It would be joining the upcomingWonder Womangame currently in development at Monolith as a single-player driven experience, as opposed to Rocksteady’sSuicide Squad: Kill The Justice Leaguefeaturing four-player co-op.
The second detail is the game will bedeveloped in Unreal Engine 5, joining the growing list of upcoming games being built on the latest version of Epic Games' engine. It may not come as much of a surprise to some players, as bothGotham KnightsandSuicide Squadwere built using Unreal Engine 4. The game would also be the first comic book adaptation confirmed to be built in the engine, while other games such as EA’sIron Mangame are only rumored to be using the engine.
It would not be surprising if WB Games Montreal remains quiet on its next potential game for some time, especially asGotham Knightshas, at the time of this writing, only been out for roughly four months. Some players may not be surprised if the studio is quiet for even longer given it had been rumored for years the studio was working on a Batman-related game, though no direct confirmation came until the 2020 DC FanDome. That said, there is no shortage of characters and stories available for WB Games Montreal to pull from if it is looking to branch out from the dark, dangerous streets ofGotham City.
Gotham Knightsis currently available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
