Discord has become a dominant application for communication on PC, with game players using both text and audio text functionality to talk with friends. It’s become such a necessity that even consoles have begun allowing Discord implementation for cross-platform communication.PlayStationplatforms, much like with cross-play in general, have been slow to take this step forward. That may be changing soon, however, as reports indicate Discord could be closer than ever to launching forPS4 and PS5.The report, from Exputer, states that multiple sources claimDiscord’s implementation on PlayStation consoleswill be coming soon. The tentative schedule for release is within the “coming months,” with no specific release date mentioned. That means that players on PS5 and PS4 could be interacting with players on PC or even Xbox through voice communication by the end of 2022, if not sooner.RELATED:Discord is Introducing a New Nitro Tier for Select UsersThe reason why a more specific release date doesn’t appear to be available is that Discord’s development for PlayStation consoles is currently testing. Development is described as “going very well,” but it’s certainly not finished. There’s also the issue of how the Discord update will be delivered. It’s described as being included in the PlayStation 5 Version 7.00 update, so Discord’s arrival is likely dependent on other features planned for thePS5 patchbeing finished before it goes live.
For those unfamiliar, PS5 firmware is currently on version 5.50, which was released in late July. The report claims that update 6.00 will be arriving in mid-September, a cadence that could mean the 7.00 update with Discord will arrive in late October or November. That would also make sense considering the holidays are such an important timeframe for major game releases. Cross-platform Discord availability would be welcomed for the launch ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2in late October orCall of Duty: Warzone 2afterward, for example.
While Discord not being available on PlayStation consoles yet may be frustrating, it hasn’t come to Xbox users yet, either. Xbox has only released an early version ofDiscord for Xbox Insidersto test it before its full launch. As such, it’s possible that the PlayStation Discord release will coincide with the Xbox release, or at least be near it.
PlayStation users can prepare for the upcomingfull release of Discord on PS4 and PS5by connecting their accounts now. Logging into Discord, users can go to User Settings and then Connections, where they’ll be able to select the PlayStation Network and log in. This will show what PlayStation game someone’s playing in their Discord client on PC. Assumedly, it will also be a step necessary for using Discord onPlayStationwhen it launches later this year, too.
