Nostalgic fans have something to look forward to whenSerious Samreturns for its next sequel in August. A new gameplay trailer revealed during theDevolver Direct online eventshowed a lot of action-packed footage from the game and it looks likeSerious Sam 4will be as crazy and carnage-filled as the originals.

Croteamannounced earlier this year that the belovedSerious Samfranchise would be returning in a new game for PC and Stadia. The game will be a prequel to 2o11’sSerious Sam 3: BFE, which also happened to be a prequel to the originalSerious Sam, so this new game will show an even earlier time in Sam’s history. Originally titledSerious Sam: Planet Badass, the game has since dropped the extra title forSerious Sam 4,but the wicked nature of the game seems to be sticking around.

The short gameplay trailer shows plenty of new and familiar enemies updated for the current generation. The well-known Kamikaze bombers and monster were-bulls can be seen as well as Sam’s extraordinary arsenal of weapons including the rocket launcher, shotgun, and cannon. TheSerious Samgamesare known for their waves of monsters which the player must dispatch in a brutally bloody fashion, and that’s exactly what is shown here.

Sam also narrates over the footage explaining he was once an explorer and captain of a starship, which is a new revelation in his backstory. TheSerious Samgameshave never been too heavily focused on narrative, with the originals sending Sam back in time to stop the hordes of creatures that the villain, Mental, has sent to destroy Earth. But it looks like this latest prequel may possibly explore Sam’s very first encounter with Mental’s armies.

Croteam revealed earlier in the year thatSerious Sam 4would be using a new legion systemthat allows literally thousands of enemies to render on screen at once. The trailer definitely delivers on this promise with many different enemy types shown attacking together, though it’s likely the full extent of the legion system will be saved for the game’s launch.

This new gameplay feature will take the first-person shooter to a whole new level as waves of enemies become even more challenging. Co-op has also been announced for the game so players won’t have to face the hordes on their own.

Serious Sam 4will release in August 2020 on PC and Stadia.
