According to Sony’s earnings call for the third quarter of the 2022 fiscal year, 30% of those who purchased a PS5 to date, haven’t owned a PS4. This means that nearly a third of PS5 owners are likely a combination of lapsed PS2/PS3 owners and new players to the platform altogether. Of course, one of the biggest draws has been the company’s slate of first-party titles that has made its way to the PS5. 2022 saw many drawn towards Sony’s console thanks to hit titles likeStray,Horizon Forbidden West, andGran Turismo7, along with God of War Ragnarok, which incidentally was thefastest-selling first-party launch for PlayStation.
The earnings report also stated that Sony has sold more than seven million PS5 units during the 2022 holiday season, which translates to an eighty-two percent rise over the previous quarter. The company’s estimates claim that it has sold a little over thirty-two million PS5 units to date, which means over twenty percent of the PS5 sales have come in the latest quarter. WhileSony expects to meet its PS5 sales forecastfor the fiscal year, it remains to be seen if the company will hit the numbers considering many gamers may not opt for spending big during the post-holiday season.
Interestingly, thePS5isn’t Sony’s only hardware that has sparked interest among the gaming community. The earnings call comes a little less than a month before the launch of PlayStation VR 2, the company’s VR headset. AsSony prepares to launch the PlayStation VR 2, it will be interesting to see how 2023 pans out for theGod of Warmaker’s hardware division. Either way, Sony’s latest earnings paint a promising few months ahead for the company.
