Over the last month, we’ve seen titles such asControl, Death Stranding, andDisco Elysiumcrowned the best game of the year from outlets ranging from theGame Awardsto major press publications such as IGN. However, despite all the end of the year picks for the coveted prize, Steam waited until the final day of 2019 to crown its game of the year, and the answer isn’t all that surprising.

Collected via votes from the Steam storefront, it appears players have electedSekiro: Shadows Die Twiceas their game of the year. FromSoftware’s newest foray into intensely challenging yet rewarding combat has clearly enamored PC players, which is far from a surprise seen as the game foundmajor critical acclaim.

Of course, this isn’tSekiro’s first taste of acclaim on the award circuit, with the game managing to capture the prestigious Game of The Year award at Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards as well as pulling in numerous other major trophies. The big difference is that Steam’s award comes from the players rather than the press, showing that while the game has managed to impress the media, it has also found favor with a large number of PC players. It’s not hard to see why either, with the game offering some of the best combat, visually rich environments, and intense boss encounters of the entire decade.

It’s worth remembering, however, that Steam’s awards were centered around games on the platform. That disqualifiesControl, The Outer Worlds, andThe Outer Wilds, all of which were in the running forGame Of The Yearat other publications. While this by no means discounts the rampant player interest inSekiro: Shadows Die Twice,it does severely narrow the competition leveled against the game when running for Game Of The Year. Regardless,Sekiroand FromSoftware are worthy winners that are no doubt more than deserving of lifting Steam’s most coveted award.

WithSekiro’scritical and commercial acclaim under its belt, FromSoftware’s upcomingElden Ringwill no doubt have a lot to live up to. Yet, with Hidetaka Miyazaki and his amazing team partnering withGame Of Thronesauthor George R.R Martin, it seems as though the game has all the potential to be another slam-dunk for the studio.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twiceis available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
