During an interview with Game Informer, Kaname Fujioka revealed that the redesign of Chun-Li was one of the hardest to make, especially since one of the character’s creators is his mentor. The art director explains that the intention is to make a version of the fighter appropriate forStreet Fighter 6, showing that Chun-Li has aged elegantly and is now wiser. Fujioka also says that the intention was to emphasize that Chun-Li was able to take out Shadaloo and is now a master figure who teaches the younger.

This is not the first time that Chun-Li has fought in a different standard costume, as she got a more athletic look in theStreet Fighter Alphaseries. Despite this, the fighter’s appearance has remained largely unchanged sinceStreet Fighter 3, which yielded one of themost broken versions of Chun-Li. InStreet Fighter 6the fighter retains classic visual elements such as the hair buns, Chinese dresses, and bracelets, but the old sex appeal was toned down to highlight her maturity and elegance.

Chun-Li’s redesign inStreet Fighter 6got lots of love from fans, who adored this new version of the fighter. Chun gets a design that respects her legacy, which allowed the release of several other female characters inStreet Fightersuch as Rose, Juri, and Cammy. The existence of the First Lady of Fighting Games also made it normal for gamers to start seeing more female characters in other fighting game franchises, and moments likeRonda Rousey inMortal Kombat 11. WithStreet Fighter 6fans are eager to see what will become of this new version of Chun-Li (story-wise) and the whole new universe created by Capcom.
