It’s no surpriseThe Batmanwould find great success following its early March release, as the reboot of the iconic DC hero has now passed 2017’sJustice Leaguethe global box office.
After Ben Affleck’s departure from the director’s chair on his Batman project, the caped crusader returned in director Matt Reeves’The Batmanreboot, this time starring Robert Pattinson as the conflicted hero in his second year of fighting crime in Gotham City. According to reports,The Batmanhas grossed $672.8M worldwide against a $185-200M budget, pushing it passedJustice League’s$657.9M. While becoming the highest-grossing film of 2022 is no doubt an impressive feat,The Batmanis still way behind other pre-pandemic comic bookblockbusters such asThe Dark Knight($1.005B),The Dark Knight Rises($1.081B),Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice($873.6M),Wonder Woman($822.3M),Aquaman($1.148B),andJoker($1.074B). It may be worth noting thatJustice Leaguestill bestsThe Batmanwhen counting for inflation, but only slightly.
But after only being in theatres for roughly three weeks, there is still lots of time forThe Batmanto climb to the top of the highest-grossing comic book films of all time. On another positive note, it appears moviegoers are feeling more and more comfortable returning to the big screen. This is something that has been gradually building since COVID-19 forced theaters and so many other businesses to shut down for quite some time.
In addition to its financial success,The Batmanis being hailed as one of the bestBatman films to date, as many critics are praising the detective exploration of the hero and the grittier, more grounded tone of the story. As for Pattinson, his portrayal as Batmanis already being regarded by many as the best live-action depictions of the character, so whatever lies ahead for his character, he will no doubt return to deliver another chilling performance.
The film also stars Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth,John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, and Peter Sarsgaard as district attorney Gil Colson. Along with directing, the film is based on a screenplay Reeves co-wrote with Peter Craig (The Town,Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 & 2,Top Gun: Maverick).
