The Flashcontinues DC’s bad luck amid several controversies. Now that the film has premiered, Kiersey Clemons is finally ready to explore what they experienced during the film’s turbulent production.
Even after the Snyderverse was discontinued, the DC film franchise continued to have issues with a unified vision. James Gunn taking the helm may correct that, but no one could have predicted the difficulties that the controversies surroundingThe Flashlead Ezra Miller would bring. When most filming was finalized, news broke about Miller’s erratic behavior. This significantly tarnished the brand, andThe Flashwas another superhero box office flop. But Miller’s behavior was only the tip of the iceberg.

In an exclusive interview withNylon, Clemons recounted issues she had that were unrelated to their co-star. Even though she played the romantic interest and comic staple Iris West, Clemons' experience was anything but magical. “Now that the movie’s out, I feel like for the last nearly 10 years, I’ve just been smiling and giving so much grace,” Clemons explained. “I think it was to protect my peace of mind. Now I can finally say and admit this whole thing made me cry more than it made me smile. I think I only smiled over this thing at the premiere.”
Although Clemons was attached to the project since 2016, she found a collection of roadblocks. COVID-19 delayed her appearance as Iris, which was only a precursor of what was coming. Like anotherIris West who was never given her due, Clemons was put through the wringer. Unlike other romantic leads like Lois Lane or Steve Trevor, the young actor didn’t get a lot of press. Instead of a co-lead of the film, Iris seemed more of a footnote. This was especially evident when Clemons discovered she was cut fromJustice League. She explained feelings of humiliation, which only paled compared to rumors that she was being recast. In addition to the drama surrounding Miller, this only made her experience in the film more tumultuous.
After all that is said and done, it is safe to say that the future of DC’sThe Flashis up in the air. Though Gunn has proven himself as a worthy DC successor, things seem more uncertain than ever and have caused somefan backlash to the DCU. Even with separating her individual experience from the Miller scandal, she has still endured a horror story in the entertainment industry. Just trying to make it in a brutal business, Clemons clung to a part for a decade only to get no respect. There is no promise of future work, and the film didn’t do as well at the box office as DC had hoped.
The best thing for Clemons is to wash her hands of a bad situation. And to her credit, Clemons isn’t doing too badly. She has appeared in smaller projects such as Donald Glover’sSwarmfor Amazon. These passion projects probably provide more creative fulfillment, which is better than performing a thankless role in an underperforming film.
