In 2020, Ubisoft officially announcedPrince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remakewith plans to release the game in early 2021. However, fans weren’t impressed with the reveal trailer, and many criticized the game for its art style and graphics. Ubisoft wound up delayingPrince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remakeindefinitely. It’s now the middle of 2022 and the game still doesn’t have a release date, but it does have a new studio working on it.
Previously,Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remakewas being developed by Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Pune, but now it’s being developed by Ubisoft Montreal. Ubisoft Montreal, for the uninitiated, is one of Ubisoft’s premiere studios, leading development on blockbuster games likeAssassin’s Creed Valhallaand the originalPrince of Persiatrilogy. In the announcement, it was explained that Ubisoft Montreal will be “building upon” the work done by Mumbai and Pune.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remakeswapping developers can be seen as a sign that the game’s development has been troubled behind the scenes. This was already fairly obvious given thePrince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake’s release date delays, but now it’s more apparent than ever before.
Hopefully Ubisoft Montreal can get the project back on track.Ubisoft Montrealhas a proven track record of developing and shipping games in a timely manner, so one has to imagine that it leading the charge onThe Sands of Time Remakeis going to be a big help. Whether or not it still releases within this current fiscal year as Ubisoft has previously indicated is another matter entirely, however, especially since the announcement mentions that the team is going to “regroup on the scope of the game.”
It should also be noted thatPrince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remakeis certainly not the only game in development at Ubisoft Montreal. The studio is also working on the free-to-playRoller Champions, and it’s most likely making anewAssassin’s Creedgameas well. Considering this, it’s hard to say how much of Ubisoft Montreal’s resources will be dedicated to finishingPrince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, so fans will still want to keep their expectations in check.
Whenever a newPrince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remaketrailerdrops, it will be interesting to see if it is more warmly-received than the initial reveal. Ubisoft has no major gaming showcases or events announced, so it’s unclear when exactly fans will get to see the game again, unfortunately.
