For those who wish to begin a life of streaming, either to forge a potential career or just for fun,Twitchis pretty much going to be the first port of call. Given that the platform is responsible for housingpopular content creators like Amouranth, Asmongold, xQc, and many more, the site is able to pull in millions of viewers every day. As a result, fans watch hours upon hours of streams, and the most recent figures show that the Amazon-owned service is doing pretty well for itself.

According to a recent story from GamesIndustry.biz,Twitchhas amassed around 1.7 billion hours in terms of content watched. And that’s just for the month of July. However, the report goes on to say that this is slightly less than the two billion that was logged at the start of this year, and the platform has yet to reach the numbers that it did in January. However, 1.7 billion is still a pretty significant figure, showing that gamers and streaming fans are watching a plethora of content en masse.

This is especially substantial when compared to the viewing figures ofalternative streaming sites like YouTube Gamingand Facebook Gaming. The numbers show that the former logged 292 million hours last month and the latter 424 million hours. By themselves, these are still impressive numbers, but they obviously pale in comparison to what Twitch is pulling in. In terms of most-watched categories on Twitch, it looks as though “Just Chatting” topped the chart with 255 million hours, while the most watched game wasLeague of Legendswith 113 million.

Despite how well Twitch and the others are doing, it was reported a few months ago thatstreaming platforms were experiencing a decline in growthoverall, especially when compared to the previous year. Whether this is due to lockdowns and other pandemic restrictions being relaxed, meaning less people are confined to their homes and thus their devices, cannot be said for certain, though it could be a factor.

Sadly, it’s not all good news for the likes ofTwitch. Withstreamers such as Keffals being swatted and doxxed, there is still a lot of hostile and negative activity that is leading to the harassment of some content creators, most of whom are from the LGBTQ+ community. This toxicity has been ongoing for some time now, and it’s hoped that the site will take serious action to ensure streamers can remain safe both on and off-camera.
